as long as the downpipe doesn't touch the oil pan or transfer case you'll be ok. no wrapping, coating, or heatshields required.

if you do extensive racing though, it is common to have the downpipe wrapped or coated to help oil temps as the downpipe passes right by the oil pan. i've got a dozen or so track days on my car with a unprotected downpipe and have never had a problem though (50k on my car now).

its all depends on your personal preference. it will have no real affect unless your doing track days.

You really are nieve if you believe that.

Wrapping it can help dissipate some of the heat going to engine, although very very little & i only see that happening when completley stopped. If you have the wrap, then do it.

I had a Ultimate Racing DP on my 03 and after wrapping it, I noticed the noise went down some. Every time it rained it smelled like *** though.

On my 06, I'm running a coated one and can almost touch it after driving the car. Coated is the way to go.

In some circumstances, wrapping can cause hairline cracking on really low quality metals or poor welds. Just something to consider. As someone else said -- unless you're really beating on your Evo and racing it, as long as its not touching you should be fine.

Maybe consider getting an oil temp gauge to monitor things?

I will be worried if it is too close to the transfer case since it just made a hole in my evo's tc. Even though it is not touching it and still have a few millimeters gap, it would still burrow a hole when it vibrates and moves. I would probably bend it or hammer it a little bit. Better yet, just chuck it out and buy a decent downpipe with enough clearance from a reputable company. It is way easier and cheaper to buy a quality downpipe than to replace your transfer case. I am not bashing any products but i did buy my downpipe from e-bay and learned my lesson the hard way.

i agree; dont put it on unless it is touching in certain spots, but you already stated that it isnt touching, so there you go
