Can a car with coded keys like the Evo be hot wired?

Just wondering if a car with coded keys can be hot wired? I just recently sold my graphite grey, '05 Evo VIII MR to a guy in Anaheim, CA. He bought it exactly a week ago today and drove it home. The police contacted me yesterday to ask if it had a LOJACK system on it because the car had been stolen. Unfortunately LOJACK doesn't have their system in place here so I never had one put on, but I was curious how auto thief's were getting past the coded key cars. Do they just tow the cars away or are they actually hot wiring them somehow and driving off with them? So... if you live in the Anaheim area be on the lookout for a Grey Evo VIII MR with all Euro lighting (blacked out) and black BBS wheels. I feel bad for this guy, and even though I sold it, I'm bummed that someone stole it and may possibly part it out. I loved that car...

My friend used a screwdriver to turn on my car in the driveway but didn't drive it.

This has been covered here before...if somebody wants your car then they will take it. No matter what you have, expensive car alarm, fuel cutoff, etc, then can always flatbed it.

I was under the impression that the key coded cars wouldn't even start unless the ECU recognized the code from the key. Is this not the case? Can any key coded car be hot wired like in the days of old? Or, is there some Hollywood type technology out that allows the code to be cracked? I too may have been living under a blanket of false security.

How did the guy that bought the car from you pay you for the car? You better hope it was either cash or a certified check so he does not try to cancel funds to you or renig on a deal because the car got stolen.

most cars with coded keys disable the fuel pump or ignition system until the key is read and recognized.

You wont be able to hotwire it like you think. How ever you could eaither

1. Bring an ECU and a matching coded key
2. Fab up a in line sensor/jumper to sort of intercept the immobilizer in the ECU to a code on a key you have
3. Universal key of sorts
4. Find out if there is a JDM or UKDM Ecu that does not use an immobilizer plug and play baby

#4 statement is how Immobilizer equipped Hondas have been stolen now for years

^ Thats what you think. I work at a motorcycle dealership and have had several incidents where someone bought a bike on a credit card and then wrecked the bike the next day and would disput the charges on the card. Also we just had a guy that bought a ATV and wrote a check for it, about 2 days later the guys ATV got stole and he put a stop payment on the check. People will do stupid things.
