Custom subwoofer?
Custom subwoofer?
i have two 10" subwoofers. My setup is very heavy with the box. I need some bump but hate the weight. I was thinking of cutting a hole in the back firewall between the arm rest(when is down) and trunk. Then mounting the subwoofer in the center. Then from the back build a box around the rear firewall with some lighter weight wood. 1 subwoofer in the back wont be loud enough i think this will do the work of 2 in the setup. Any suggestions
no dont do that. ill tell you what..for 400 bucks you can get a box that is all fiberglass like 5lbs that is molded into your trunk side and looks factory and sounds awesome. i have one 10" hx2 and 1500 watts and it sounds freakin awesome and looks better than it sounds.
You could do what is suggested above but why not use 1 sub...you need to remember that you only gain 3-6 db with each sub added to your system granted that you give them the same power. I currently have a single jl w3 in a ported enclosure and it slams! I say try it and see how you like it.

I had the same problem as the OP. and I found a company that makes dual fiberglass boxes that fit in the back rear of the car, Wicked Car Audio Systems. I looked at the Audio Integrations box, but was unhappy that it only took 12s, the internal volume could only fit 2 different subs without a band-aid fix of batting and that they only offered a single sided driver's side box.
The wicked boxes are extremely light (about 10-12 lbs), are very thick (3/8-1/2") and can be made in 10" and 12" models. I ordered the 10", but when I measured the internal volume, they are big enough to handle most 12" subs on the market.
I've so far only installed one due to time constraints, but I am EXTREMLY impressed. the design of the box has no large flat areas for the glass to flex, and once bolted in and snugged in place, the box looks VERY factory (If Mitusbishi were to install dual JL Audio Subs in an Evo) here's a link to my install so far:

I chose carpet, but the shop will paint match the boxes to your car for an aditional fee.
As for the rule of thumb comment and multiple subs. That is true for the same wattage. but as I run 600w on my bass channels, it's hard to find a single 10" sub that will handle this without being overloaded. I am running dual JL audio 10W3V2 dual voice coil subs. I love this dual voice coil line.
Also, while I have run ported boxes in the past.... and yes, they were designed to be optimal with the correct volume, port length and port diameter, ported boxes always sound muddy. I like a very tight bass.

You've got a ton of options:
1) This is my set up. I have one 12" JL in a custom fiberglass box. The box weighs about 10-12lbs. A vendor on this forum sells this box. Everyone who gets in my car finds it hard to believe it's only one 12". It's loud, clean and very musical.

2) Here's a custom MDF option. Looks clean and would hold your two 10's. Said to weigh around 25-27lbs. Not sure about quality or how it sounds, but seems to get good reviews in this thread.

3) Tempe Racer's set up as mentioned above...his has to sound damn good.
4) buy one of those Qlogic boxes (not recommended)
5) have something custom made (big $)
