Dyno whoopass! 436 Wheel HP - no NOS - Evo VIII
Just curious how the lag is with the 3037? I have heard that the lag is terrible before 4500 RPM, and that the set up really isn't streetable. Just wondering what your take on this is AL, and also, if you keep the RPM's above 4500, if you stomp on it, do you have instant boost, or does it still take a while to spool. I know that that turbo swap is like 5G, so please tell us your real world take on the power it produces. I know dyno runs are very very imporessive, but street use is also important. Just curious if you think your set up now is faster or slower on the street then the 16G you had on there. Also, why did you go with the 3037? I know that some people have talked about a 18G 20G and 25G upgrades, and also there are a few other HKS turbos that people have been using. What was your deciding factor with that turbo? It must be great to be able to drop all the money that no one else is brave enough to spend on their EVO. I don't know if I should post a happy or a sad face ....

My two big criteria for sizing a turbo for my style of driving is the following :
1 - Does it make FULL boost in 1st gear? On the DSM it does - on my STI is did not - it needed NOS to get over 15 psi in 1st - whereas with the evo I can hit 30 psi of boost in 1st gear and did so my accident when setting my boost controller
2 - Does the turbo fall off or lag between shifts at red line?? On this evo there is no drop off in power in bettween shifts
For my style - as long as criteria #1 & #2 are met - then the turbo will work for me - becuase all you need to do to avoid turbo lag is keep the revs up high over 4000
If you look at the dyno sheet you will see that the car is making far more trq than the stock turbo after 4,000 so that is the magic number
The stock turbo was reaching FULL boost 1,000 rpms sooner - but that was after significant tuning effort to work in more spool up

To me - I am happy with this turbo - its much less laggy than when it was on my STI - the STI needed till just around 5,000 rpms to reach full boost
There are some however who may dislike this level of lag - and for those there are smaller kits such as a 20 g or the 2835 kit
Also - my back housing on this turbo is a .87 and there is a .60 avialable which would prob give me back 300 rpms of spool up at the expense of some top end breathing
Hope this answers your question ? You would have to drive this set up to see how sick it is - words can not describe the feeling when it starts to kick in
thats great to hear about your dyno run. i didnt know a monster like that lives close to me
. i live in montvale nj and id love to check out your car when your @ nanuet...thats 5 mins away from me. i just dont have enough words to express how nice your setup is.
Al, Thanks for telling us your secrets. Thats awsome for you to share because we all want a faster EVO or sti killer.
Who did the cam install and engine management tuning.
I myself dont feel confident in doing this myself and would like to know who you would recommend.
I live in Ohio and I would be willing to drive up your way to have the work done.
Nice job on the EVO, I hope you keep it up. Your really helping a ton of people out.

Not easy at all - but when you have the help of serious professionals like Pruven to make all the needed pipes its not bad
Some good news is that Pruven did tell me they took jigs of my pipes and will be selling the needed pipes as a kit

And I will be collecting my rain check on that ride real soon. I will be Visiting Dan and the Pruven crew real soon for base line dyno runs.
Well, I think Al's internet trash talk has been backed up and secured for a while...
Nice Al
Too bad you can't make it down here to College Station, Tx on the 26th and 27th for the Import vs. Domestic track day... Be nice for a "big stick" other than Supras to show up and lay some smack down.

The Texas Motorsports Club is running an event at Texas World Speedway on the 2.9 mile infield road course on July 26-27th.
I will be there with my C5.
KDubb will probably be there with his Camaro.
I'm calling out all you import owners who talk big game about how thier cars will outhandle a Camaro, and about how domestics can't run unless they're in a straight line, or how thier car handles so well or whatever to come out and put the smack talk on the track. Transponders will be available for timing and scoring information.
Time to put up or shut up. Who wants in?
Entry list so far:
2dr vette be there with my C5.
KDubb will probably be there with his Camaro.
