More info I found:
Evo VII Evolves
A six-speed manual transmission will boost the Mitsubishi Evo VII's appeal from spring 2002. Currently its five-speed gearbox is one of the only marketing areas where the Evo lags behind the Impreza STi, which already has a six-speed 'box.
The Evo VII is selling well in Japan, spurred on by its lower price compared to the Evo VI and customer resistance to the styling of its arch-rival, the Impreza STi. Mitsubishi is also planning a five-door estate Evo VII, based on the current Cedia estate bodyshell, which will add niche sales.
Next year, once Mitsubishi has sold its intended 10,000 examples of the Evo VII, the company plans to introduce the Evo VIII. This will see a return to the famous dinner-plate foglamps of all previous Evo generations. A boost in torque is also expected, but perhaps the most surprising addition will be an automatic transmission option for the very first time on an Evo. Again, the Impreza WRX has always boasted a self-shifting transmission option in Japan.
Also in spring next year, an Evo-based sports utility vehicle will be unleashed to do battle with Subaru's Impreza WRX-based Forester T/tb. The new Air Trek off/on-road estate (launched in Japan in June) will receive a detuned version of the Lancer Evo 4G63 turbocharged engine, boasting less power at 260bhp but more torque than the Evo VII.

6 speed? I don't mind that I guess but I like driving a 5 speed. I guess if Mitsu makes the ratios right for touge I'll be happy. AYC or no AYC it doesn't matter; as long as the 4g63 and a solid tranny is in there I'm happy.

Where did you get your info. I have been told that the VII will definately NOT be getting a 6 speed box. Spring 2002 is already here and this hasn't been announced.
This info seems to be a lot of old rumours, because the one about the auto box has already happened

Mechincal diffs, no active stuff (because of warranty issues)
Different bumpers, fron and rear.
has to work around the large intercooler and has to lower the bumper rating to legal limit of 2 1/2 mph=different bumper- my guess it will look even better.
270 h.p.
270 is what I'm hearing as well
I hope the rest stays though (Recaros, Brembos,
snelson,

Oh, well...
A 270hp 4-cylinder turbo AWD is still a nice car even if the interior looks cheap (compared to say VWs) and Mitsubishi's US market nose grill looks horrible. Personally, I won't mind a toned down bumper and a lack of wing(s) -- I for one thinks the WRX's front fascia was overly ricey and I find the Lancer EVO's rear wing ridiculous.
If the car comes in under $30K I'll probably buy it. If it has a big wing I'll just remove it, plug up the holes and repaint the trunk lid. Otherwise, I'll find another AWD turbo compact, maybe the Golf V 4-motion, maybe a Subaru, maybe an Audi S3 if they bring one to the US.

Thta source is so old and unreliable I wouldn't trust it at all. I can tell you that the VII will not be getting a 6 speed box. The VIII is already being tested in Japan and a 6 speed box is being tested but no decision has been made. The earliest production of the VIII can begin is November this year because VII production is booked up until then.
For what it is worth, I have heard from a source at Ralliart Japan that the US will NOT GET THE VII. YOU WILL GET THE VIII. The earliest deliveries will be January 2003. Power will be about 250 bhp although they are still working on getting the best performance for US regs. The car WILL NOT have AYC, but will have a big fuel tank. Price has not been finalised.
Do I think my source is reliable? Yes. I would bet the bank on it. I believe that the above is the current plan. But they do not need to fix the spec for another 6 months.
Hope this helps. I have no axe to grind about the US market, there is no reason for me to post BS. I post this in good faith. And for what its worth, I think that for the price, the spec will be great and the car will be a lot better than the Scooby. Don't get hung up on a spec. Wait and see how the car drives.

Makes sense that it is the Evo8 if the bumpers are changing.
Each evolution of the Lancer has a new set of bumpers, weird.
Mechanical diffs are better as it means less servicing, cheaper and less things that can go wrong.
The Evo6 has a mechanical center and rear diff but you dont hear complaints about the handling do you?
270hp is plenty good, look forward to the car.

Is HP truely something to factor in? I personally hope more that the important things(gearbox/gear rations and current 4G63 bore, stroke and block head) just remain intact regardless of final production BHP/Toque output otherwise US Evos will not be able to share in the wealth of aftermarket parts already available.
