here it is simply put. are you prepared to spend $1k in tools to work on your car? You will need to buy a FSM first and foremost. Those range in price but you can plan on it being $200 for the cd. Now go to snap-on and pick out 3 torque wrenches, one big one ($300) one angle wrench ($300) and maybe one in/lbs one ($200). Since you are there you may want to get a feeler gauge as well ($30)

now do you want to pay someone $800 or do you want to spend the money to do it?

edit, oh yeah most gear heads i know i wouldn't let near my car without me being certain i know more than they do

Holy cow!!! What kind of torque wrenches do you own that cost $300? Mine was like $60 at Pep Boys and it does the job.

I torque almost everything. There are some things that you just get the feel for over time and dont torque any more ie. Exhaust and Drain Plugs, misc bots here and there. I do however always torque my wheels, spark plugs, suspension components, and anything internal in the motor

your torque wrench should have an accuracy scale on it and you will see most aren't exact and in general the cheaper ones have mechanisms that are of either lower quality or are just made with lower quality steel.

I have seen cheaper wrenches snap in half above 100ft/lbs. and I have also seen some of the cheaper ones read incorrectly and had friends shear bolts.

Snap-on's are digital, even their angle ones and they generally have the quality stuff im looking for when building a motor.

ymmv

Yet another evo owner that has no idea how a car functions. Go street race and jack up my insurance.

Get a nice tq wrench and go by the spes. If not then you are going to regret it. Tightening things up are really not that simple espeacially when you have an aluminum head.

I reckon tighten it till it starts to spin free again and then give it one turn back!!

it might be stripped but dont worry about it!!

Dude if you don't have the right tools don't do the job.

Like the one guy suggested they not there to fill up space in the Manual!

very important, thats why i bought a torque wrench, I bought a cheap one for $20 and suprisingly it works well. I was doing my plugs and didn't torque them down correctly and my gas mileage was bad.

Harbor Freight torque wrenches ftw! I've been using mine for years and I've heard nothing but good things about them. $20-30 is all you need.

Definitely get one, you will save yourself a lot of frustration. It's amazing how easy it is to over tighten (read: break) stuff.
