my first snow with the evo.... with advans
Also, the Advans behave worse as the temperature drops lower... passing 20 degrees the tread blocks become harder than hockey pucks. Save your stockers for all the other seasons and run a snow tire for winter. I use the Pilot Alpines; they are great, but not the cheapest.
i dont understand how people are always posting about how they magically spun out when they were doing the speedlimits and all that crap....
i had to drive home from work and to work this morning in snow, on the stock advans. i had NO problems what so ever driving to work. never did the car feel like it was going to lose control or anything. and i was doing the speedlimits....
oh and the tires have just a little over 11,000 miles on them too.
i know that if there was an emergency situation, like someone slamming on their brakes, i would not be able to stop in time... so i dont drive my car at all unless its to and from work....

This is a pretty immature and ignorant post, I would recommend that nobody actually lessons to this guy. Although the EVO is one of the best handling cars on the planet with the wrong equipment it is just as dangerous any other vehicle. PLEASE PEOPLE DON'T LESSON TO THIS GUY!!!!! High performance summer tires are for the Summer climate and temperatures not winter.

...Don't worry about him, he'll changed his tune when he hits his first victim, I don't wish him any bad luck, but what are you suppose to do when a person is being so hard-headed? One day I arrived at work, it was clear as whistle. By the time I got off, we had 2 to 3inches of snow on the ground. I had to let out maybe 10lbs. of air out of all tires so that I could get some kinda grip. And that didn't help any. It was fine for 1 to 3 MPH. Good Luck Guy
Get some Blizzakks. You'll never look back.
you must not be telling us the truth, I bought my car in January 05, about a few weeks later it snowed and I figured hey this car is AWD no big deal.
but as soon as I took off in snow mode and tried to make a left the car went sideways and it was only 1/2" of snow with almost brand new advans.
so I must say from my experience this thread is bull.

Considering how Mitsubishi put a disclaimer on the driver's side door on 05 Evos basically saying, "Hey as*hole, don't bother using these tires in the winter or you're putting your car, life, and others' lives in danger." I would say it's not a good idea.
(applies to on topic) I wouldn't get so confident, I've done the same mistake before driving in the snow, I learned the hard way, I drove slower than the speed limit, barely tapped the brake around a corner and slid 20 feet towards a curb and this was at 10 mph, the cost of damage was a lip, rim and bent strut, with the way you talk I'm sure your damage would cost you more
I live close to where the OP lives and I got stuck in the same snowy weather with my Advans too. My snow wheels/tires were in storage and it's my fault for not watchin the weather predictions. I had no problem this time because the snow was very wet and slushy. You just gotta drive real slow and stay the f*&% out of boost. Especially when you'r not on level roads because the car's enertia (even at 5-10 mph) is more than the grip of the advans can handle.
I still had more traction than RWD cars because as I came to the bottom of a hill, there were a couple of rwd cars spinning tires and I went right around them up a fully snow covered hill with my advans on. Even though I made it to work and back just fine, I am still going to get my winter set out just for peace of mind and that extra margin of safety.

I drove my evo in the winter when i bought it last winter, it wasnt that bad, but i wouldn't risk driving on those tires. it was about 2" of snow and the car was sliding a little bit when cornering.
Off topic, which tires and wheel setups do you guys have for winter, any recommendations? im thinking about blizzaks but dont know which wheels to pick that are good for winter.
thanks
