Engine Cover Cracked - Why?

Today I had my IX SE engine cover replaced. It was completely cracked. I wonder if anybody has had the same problem, and if you know why it happens. The fix was easy enough and under warranty, but I wonder if it's symptomatic of a worse problem. Thanks!

mine cracked near each screw on the right hand side....not a big deal...I'd take it to the dealer...but i don't want them to see my car unless I absolutely have to take it there.....plus I'd like to get a carbon fiber cover anyhow

Do you mean that piece of plastic or the valve cover?

I've seen lots of spark plug covers cracked. The valve cover is magnesium and can be slightly brittle. I don't doubt they crack fairly often.

Yes mine cracked also. Factory plastic blows. Go CF or Billet.

+1

dsm valve covers are the same way, they only require a few ft-lbs of torque. any more and they crack very easily.

I never messed with the cover - so perhaps it was set incorrectly at the factory. Anyway - it was under warranty, so the replacement did not cost me any $.

The plastic cover on my IX cracked too; right side originating from the bolt holes. The right side is also warped upwards! Time to get it replaced under warranty.... strange, must be the rapid cooling and warming in winter, as I've never touched the cover.
