I don't see it this way. The rust is prob caused by water sitting under the wing sides after each car washing. No wing = no hiding place that you can't wipe down when washing.

I was thinking about removing mine this weekend but now I dunno...

The rust is caused because on the 03-05 Evo's, they only had a piece of adhesive felt between the wing and the bumper... and the corner of the wing rubbed the piant through to the sheet metal allowing it to corrode. The IX's are different in that they have more thorough 2-sided tape on the back. The BS of it is Mitsubishi obviously saw the problem and addressed it with the "new" wing on the IX and also how it was fastened to the trunk.

I have a question that's probably really stupid but I took my wing off today and I have some rust, big surprise, but the adhesive strips I can't get off no matter what I use. Any suggestions that won't take paint off?

you can't just clay the rust if its down to the metal, you gotta go to more extremes than just clay...something to the nature of rust remover+primer+repaint

I don't know about that. The fastest evo (RS) came wingless should it be considered a lancer?

Every manufacturer that I know of has at least a 5 year/60kmi corrosion warranty. Regardless of what a dealer would say, if it has that warranty (easy to find out), it WILL be covered. It might require you to call Mitsu itself, but the dealer would be breaking the law if in the end they didn't follow through. You just may need to be persistent. This is the reason why I let my local dealer do routing maintenance on my vehicles. They're a lot more likely to go to bat for you if you're a paying customer vs. a PITA that only comes in for warranty work. I've have it work in my favor before, with several different vehicles.
-Now-
So what if you have hail damage? If the rust is to the point where it actually started rotting the metal, you still should get a new deck lid. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand rust/rot doesn't happen over-night, meaning the trunk obviously started rusting long before you got the hail. I don't see Mitsu paying to cut out the rot, welding in a new piece of metal, and then painting it, so I'm willing to bet you'd simply get a new deck lid. Might wanna give it a shot, a little time invested might yield a new trunk for no money out of your pocket. All the dealer needs to do is file the claim, and if you're installing a CF decklid, they get to bill Mitsu for installation without having to do it. Warranty work pays less than customer pay, but in your case, they get to pay Mitsu for installing it, and they don't have to do anything but hand you the part. That's better than customer pay.
Ya dig?
Good luck
