Take the difference between the guy who said he has a 2200 mortgage and my 800 rent. Thats close to 17000 dollars a year. Invest that and I bet you would get close to what he is making in his "house investment."

We all know that a car is the worst thing you can put your money into. We also know its one of the most fun things to put your money into. I am going to buy a house when I get back from Japan next year, so I'm not saying don't ever buy a house, but I just don't get how some people put such a high priority on it. Hell, getting your roof re-done is the same price as buying a new Evo .
the difference between your 800/mo rent and the guys 2200/mo mortgage is that a portion of his money (depending on his interest rate and type of loan) is being applied to the mortgage, so it will be given back to him when he sells, where as your rent is going to pay your landlords mortgage and when you leave you will be lucky to get your security deposit back. lol

I worked my butt off in school for many years, worked just as hard at my job, and now I'm enjoying the benefits.

Im with this guy and i am surprised at how young some people are in this forum. PERSONALLY, i don't think you should drive a $30k + car if you live at home, go to school or live in a house with your buddies paying $500/mnth rent

PERSONALLY i think you should be on your own, paying all your own bills and be able to stand on your own financially without school or a credit card debt.

There are some college kids here that have modded cars....WTF??!!

I am 27, fortunate enough to make very very good money and this was the first car i bought brand new (i drove a geo prizm in college because i needed to worry about putting gas in the tank, not moding a performance car)

I had actually planned on buying a house before buying a new car but it turns out this had to come first so the house comes this year (i was lucky enough to hold out for this housing market)

Please understand there are a lot of different reasons people mod or don't mod their car. But to say it's because someone else is paying for it shows your lack of world knowledge that comes with being fully independant (except for student loan paybacks, lol)

YMMV

I would like to make a stand for the 18-22 year old category that I fall into. I know that i am nowhere close the the 20 year old paradigm, but I can enjoy free housing and food while still being completely Independent of my parents. I am recently 20 years old and I'm going to Ft. Rucker, AL to begin Flight School in April. As an enlisted soldier i get free housing in the barracks and free food in the DFAC. What that means to me, a single guy with no real bills other than the evo, is that 80% of my monthly income is readily expendible. Things will only get better when i become a warrant officer because my monthly income will more than double while my bills stay the same. For the younger guys THERES STILL HOPE!! However it comes with the sacrifices of deployments and stressful living. Just remember that if you see me on the street and think im "that guy" lol

Thumbs up

Or, you have it as a hobby and do some work on the side as well.

Here are some examples for one month:

1. Installing MBC - $60.00 * 4 = 240.00
2. Installing cams - $400.00 * 2 = $800.00
3. Springs and retainers - $200.00 (due to the risks involve w/o removing the head) in addition to number 2. = $400.00
4. Upgrade FMIC and Pipes - $150.00 * 2 = $300.00

Total: 1740.00*

And here is your Stage 3 racing head or green!

Be aware that some people are upgrading the car as they climb to the TQ/HP ladder! Therefore, the gross amount is at the beginning on their initial purchases and you start selling old parts and buying newer parts as you go to finance the next step.

This is how I do it in top of my salary!

BTW, this is my hobby and do some works on the side as well..... on cars and professionally.

So, it is not always mommy who is paying for mods!

*Note: those are approximate numbers to illustrate how the process works.

You are correct, military is a whole new ball game. Some of the discounts you guys get are insane. Thank you for your service to this country!

Thanks, by the end of the year im not sure what i'll be more excited about. Flying a $24 Million Apache, or the Ride to work in my Evo. With my warrant officer pay coming soon, i challenged my dad to a 1/4 showdown this december. He's currently the LXForums Big Displacement/ Power Adder record holder with an 11.2 @121.9 in a 06 Magnum.

I would be more excited about flying the Apache. Almost anyone can afford and Evo somehow. Not everyone will ever get the chance to fly an Apache.

I think the main problem are people buying houses they honestly cannot afford.

Buying a house would be a good investment if your monthly rent is somewhat within range of what your mortgage payment would be.

If your anticipated mortgage payment is that much more than your rent (as in your example +$1,400) it would be a bad move.

As an exmaple of a house being an investment I purchased my home in NJ almost 3 years ago for $460k and about 6 months ago I took out a home equity loan.

As part of the process my home was appraised by the lender.

The appraisal came out to be $600k.

Granted I probably would not be able to sell the house for $600k, but more realistically $550k, which would mean I'm +$100k in close to 3 years.

Not accounting some home improvements I did with the equity loan.

BTW, $2,200 / month isn't that high in the tri-state area of NY/NJ/CT .

Great Thread. I also fall in the age group of 18-22, I am now 22, and have had the car for awhile not including when I had the Sti. I got that car when I was 19. I got lucky and found a decent job earning good pay and was able to stay with my parents for awhile. Now I kind of wish I didn't have a car payment. So I could mod the hell out of the 240sx.

I come onto a TON of different forums A LOT! I see all my freinds with big turbo's, built motors even with some cosmetics involved. I also see them buying extra fuel pumps, TONS of gaskets, extra this extra that extra short blocks...

I'm sitting here, WONDERING, when the hell I'm going to get myself a friggin $100 fuel pump!

I have some mods yes, I'm buying $3000 worth of mods next month and it's ONLY BECAUSE I'M GETTING A REDBATE CHECK FROM SCHOOL! haha (and my taxes of course) and this is a HUGE deal to me! lol

I see threads started with people posting mods list the longer then the population list of Asia. I also see people randomly buying 35r's, or driving 7 hours for a tune, or just getting a tune, or blowing a motor then WAM suddenly you have another one, stroker motor, built.

I work full time, I am also a full time student. I can honestly say, I'm not doing to shabby financially.

HOW DO YOU GUYS DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! charge it? cash? Just college grads in a career?? WHAT THE CRAP IS IT!!!! I've been on various car forums for like 5 years now, since I was 16. I've never asked this question and it never made sense to me. My other forums were not even close to as humble as this one when someone buys a big turbo lol

(sorry for the long post.. I've wanted to ask this for so long haha)
