I'd really just check the base for any damage that would keep it shifted over, especially since the trans was rebuilt. Let me know how it works out.

yeah I've got it all apart right now. I've noticed that it gets resistance mostly in 3rd and 4th. which means the shift linkage cable that determines those two gears might be the problem. I'm not seeing any damage though. Might just try and replace that whole cable. it seems like the other cable is fine though.

if you have the console open it is the shift linkage cable on the right

It kinda sounds like maybe one of the bushings in the shifter base could have popped under the base. I mean with enough force you might be able to force that rubber under it. Right? I'm just trying to remember from when I changed mine out.

If you disconnect the cables from the in-cabim shifter base. So the gear lever is free moving. Does it move in the normal positions? The gear shifter is quite a neat little invention, perhaps one of your springs are broken? I have mine taken apart right now actually, I can go take a photo of the base and you can compare the alignment. I have a 6 speed though, but it should be similar.

my suggestions is if you have a friend that has an VIII as you do ask him to stop by your house one day disassemble the console on your and his car and compare everything side by side, including linkage by the transmission. Maybe you will be able to see something that you cannot now.

I installed an agency pwr short shifter and putting it back together, parts 4and5 were upside down so that i had to twist them, then get the spherical bearing clipped in... should parts 4 and 5 even be upside down when you go to reattach the shifter???

It would seem like it should be the plate. Weird though, you replaced it?

Even in the diagram number 11 looks pretty intricate, alot of parts to bend....even slightly would give you a problem.
