Crash beams - remove or keep

I have a JDM rear bumper and aftermarket FMIC. I removed the rear crash beam when installing the JDM rear and I removed the front crash beam when putting in the FMIC.

I know those items prevent some damage in the event of a 10mph impact but what I really want to know is if they play a major role in major impacts. I would also like to know if they stiffen up the chassis or if they are just there because of US requirements.

A little research indicated that the JDM cars do not come with either of these items so I'm guessing they don't provide additional rigidity.

crash beams serve a purpose. just like seat-belts. whether you choose to use them, is up to you.

Your insurance probably won't like you if you ever get in a crash and they find out your crash beams were removed.

I removed mine when i put on my JDM rear. The reason the JDM EVO doesnt have either is because they do not have the same safety regulations as the US. I actually work in the field of automotive crash impact safety measures, and the US is by far the most strict when it comes to overall vehicle safety.

I voted but it was a hypocritical vote. I don't have either crash beams on my car. I have a C-West front and a JDM Rear. I'm considering a different set up altogether just to install my crash beams back on the car.

If you do a lot of city driving, consider not removing it.

Well lets look at this from an non-accident point of view. Do the bars provide anything other than low impact safety?

No. They are strictly there for low speed impact.

im willing to guarantee that if you get into a accident and you donot have them, the insurance willnot cover any damage. and they play a great role in how and when the airbags decide to go.

Exactly!! Don't sacrifice safety. I know there is a way to modify the existing crash beam for the JDM rear, but the FMIC may take a little more work.

The bumper is for low speed accidents!

The crash beam is for major accidents. It dissipates energy in offset collisions. It also serves to aid in structural rigidity in some circumstances.

KEEP IT ON!

I know from personal experience. My VIII is still stock. Last month I was in stop and go traffic on the freeway on my way home from work. (Yes I'm in LA where stopping on the freeway is normal.) Anyways, everyone stopped and I did as well. The lady behind me wasn't paying attention and had a late reaction and slammed on her brakes and skidded into me. CHP estimated her speed at approx. 30 - 35 mph when she slammed on the brakes and hit me.

The crash beams saved the frame. Even though the frame wasn't damaged, it still cost $6700 to fix the rear end. If I didn't have the crash beam she probably would have totaled my car.

The crash beam for low speed accidents , for insurance purpose. Less damage will occure if you have it . They are rated under 10 mph.
Dont be confused the "safety" word between the seatbelt and the us crash beam. The car wasnt designed to have them, neither front and rear. All around the world ,where over 16 years now evo's running on the road with higher speed limits etc , no other country used them.
But it might serve they purpose, if you have a fender bender...

^ Thats what I figured. There's no way the a bar held on with 4 tiny bolts is gonna add protection in a major accident.
