Definitely get a boost gauge. That was the very first thing I bought for my evo. It helped me to discover the factory boost solenoid wasn't hooked up, and that I was only boosting to wastegate pressure. If you've got the cash, get a Defi BF Amber series gauge and the Control Unit II. The Prosport gauges are a little cheaper, and if you want an accurate gauge that gets the job done without all the flashiness, go with Stewart Warner.

defi BF amber setup is the best IMO. matches perfectly and sexy to boot. springs can wait. stock springs are fine. and anyway NYC roads suck to begin with..do you reallie want to feel it that much more. Recaros up the *** is not my cup of tea. but props to an Evo 9 on the NYC streets. dont forget your LoJack...2way... and alpha locks =)
If you do choose to lower the car, remember to reset the alignment. I've seen too many people on the road who are running massive front and rear +camber because they dont know jack about modifying suspensions.

Hey Bro! I would actually go with a wideband and a tactrix cable first! LOL Gotta love openECU! But back to your original question, gauges first then springs IMO. The Prosport gauges match the factory gauges very nicely. I have the ProSport EGT, Boost and Oil Pressure gauges in the A pillar pod and the AEM Wideband on the column mount. I'll try to post a picture later if I can get my stupid camera working. LOL
