UGH! Another Steering Clunk

Hey guys, I did a search and found similar problems other people have experienced. However, I couldn't find any that completely relates to the issue I am having right now.

Today, I got outside and swapped my summer wheels out. I have been riding on the stock Enkei wheels with 245/45/17 Toyo Proxies 4 tires. I swapped this set out for my summer wheels which are Volk TE37's with 245/40/18 Falken Azenis RT615 tires.

Now for the problem. When I swapped the wheels over, it seems I've developed a clunk or pop noise in the steering. At low speeds if I flick the steering wheel a little left or a little right I get this noise. This is only at slower speeds though. What I'm wanting to know is why it does this with the 18" wheels and not the stock 17" wheels. The car has Muellerized' JIC Magic coilovers on it, if that helps any.

I want to know how to fix this and why it only does it with the larger 18inch wheels on the car.

Thanks in advance guys!

id say check your sway bar links / bushings. possibly worn out. (aka stabilizer bar bushings or the links themselves)

I think it's a little bushing that goes in the firewall that helps hold the steering arm. Mine does it every once in awhile and I'm on stock wheels.

Mine started does this exact thing this winter. As I'm pulling up to a stop or taking off, or when I've just come to a stop if I turn the steering wheel left or right slightly I get a clunk or pop sound. I did an initial check of my sway bar end links and they look fine. The steering isn't loose or anything either. I had assumed the bushing on the steering rack was making the noise and it wasn't a big deal. Anyone have more detail?

I got out and checked the torque on my lugs and there fine. I took it for a test drive and it seemed to not be doing it as bad today. I don't know why, but I'm not complaining.

Since there are so many people with similar problems, I'd figure someone would have found a total solution by now. Hmmm

isn't this the steering shaft spline which is located on the intermmediate shaft between the two u joints?

it it were the culprit, this was originally designed as a sliding shaft during frontal collisions wherein the column slides instead of collapses upon impact, hoping to reduce body injury to the driver.

Remove the coffee cup and empty propane tank from the trunk.
