Insane Gas $$ - But Better Mileage!!!
how are you figuring better mileage than the Civic? I have no idea what it is rated at, but I THRASH my 2004 Civic EX (or maybe it's an LX... who knows)... WOT from stoplights, AC on coldest, shifting at 4 grand and I can't get anything less than 38mpg.

Without getting much into an argument I can only say that my gas mileage on both Evos here in Tucson were just miserable. It did not matter if it was city, combined or HWY, the gas mileage was simply poor.
A typical refill will consist on mid 12 galons and reseting the trip odometer every 210-220ish in city.
I do recal a few long distance trips to Phoenix and driving around Phoenix, also a trip to Las vegas and and finally a trip to San Diego and making just a hair over 300 miles in HWY.
Each car is different so I can't say you aren't getting what you are getting but filling up the upper half of the fuel gauge I can tell you that it last more than the lower half of the fuel gauge. The fuel gauges are not accurate at all, very often you can drive smaller cars and you can do up to 70-100miles before the fuel gauge barely start dropping from the top.
Getting high 28 mpg in Tucson at this altitude and temperature I always thought impossible. Just remember, the manufacturer rates the Evos like 18mpg city, and you managed to improve that by 60% under adverse conditions(altitude , heat)? you are the man!I guess...
So basically, you are getting better gas mileage than a 105 hp Honda Fit, better than a 140hp honda civic,118hp mini and off course another 3000 cars in the market....

Carlos....why do you hate me
just joking....I actually get 33mpg in the 06 civic I have
Hey...what do you want from me.....I fill up at half a tank for the last four months...I drive the evo "Sanely" around town...I'd fill up 7 gallons each time...give or take a .4 or so and I have been resetting the trip at about 200-203 each time....I can't explain it.....other than I started using the tips...whatever though.....who am I but a nobody in the vast universe
There are filters on all the pumps, so sediment is unlikley to make its way into your tank. If it does, most cars have fuel filters anyways.
Fumes will not cause you to pump less gas, nor will pumping slower. The handle clicks off when the nozzle senses LIQUID at the setpoint, not air or fumes.
Just drive slow, fill your tires up to the proper psi, or buy a prius.

Any increase in fuel mileage you are seeing is due to psychological effect. Since you think you're getting better fuel mileage you're probably driving a tiny bit less aggressive even if you don't realize it. The fuel tanks at gas stations are buried deep underground and are barely affected by short-term ambient temp changes throughout the day. If any of you buy into this chain-email crap you're incredibly gullible.
Most of you guys are missing the point of this thread. Just because you drive an Evo doesn't mean you shouldn't care about gas mileage. Paying attention to it could possibly prevent something catastrophic from happening to your car. If you don't want to follow these tips or think it's BS, that's fine, but some of us like to have a little more money to spend or save on other things. Not all of us are made of money or have it growing out of trees in our backyards like some of you make it seem. We're not driving Veyron's or Viper's, so stop saying," Dude, you drive an evo, you shouldn't even care where the fuel needle is". That's why our cars are called economy cars, not super cars!
But I would also like to add that I would rather be driving than sitting at a station pumping fuel. Right now I average 180 to 190 MPG on a half tank.
Besides driving crazy all the time increases the chances of getting a ticket unless I am at a track, but then there is no need to think about fuel.
I am not sure how well these tips will work if any at all. But it is not like trying them will hurt me either.

I remember reading this thread a while back and then today I saw this article..... it looks like it isn't even worth it to try and fill up at certain times. Just go whenever you need gas....

Why buy an evo to get good gas mileage? Sure maybe you save a few bucks but your gonna be bored doing it. If your gonna drive an evo like that why didnt you just go buy a civic cuz you gotta drive just as slow as one to get even half of mpg that does.
Plus like many have said its all psychological. These tips dont do a thing. Want better gas mileage? Check your tire pressure, buy an intake and exhaust, get tuned and drive less aggressive.
I also bet that if you added up your months spendings on gas filling up half a tank you would be spending just as much as I am waiting til i am on empty.
Also I drive my car hard most of the day. Lots of spirited driving everytime Im in the wheel. All city driving and I still manage around 19-20 mpg. 240-280 a tank to empty. But even if I was getting 7 mpg it wouldnt stop me from driving my car how its supposed to be driven. Id rather be broke and having fun then save a few nickels and dimes babying the car.
