transponderless key immobilzing vehicle?

hi guys, sold my 8 and bought a theft recovery 9, car came missing a bunch of stuff but i think ive got it 99% back together. the car came with a generic looking key, that opens the doors but not the trunk, and goes into the ignition cylender and cranks the car but wont start it. the key doesnt have the black plastic on the head so it obviously doesnt have the chip in it. also the green light on the gauges with the car/key is illuminated when i turn the key to the on position. Does the key sound like a plausible cause or should i start looking elsewhere for the problem?? if it is the key, or even if its not, can i get a replacement key and remote without takeing the car to the dealership? thanks in advance. -al

thought it might be worth mentioning that i pulled on uf the plug wires while cranking the vehicle and it didnt appear to be firing. is this how the immobilizer works?

if it is legit, just bring it to the dealer with your proof of ownership and they can program one for you.

so that is my only option. wouldnt be a big deal except that my closest mitsu dealership is 60 miles away, and i dont have a truck or trailor... guess ill have to rent one. anyone know if this behavior does indeed sound as if it's caused by the immobilizer?? thanks.

Yes the key you have does not have a transponder in it. It will unlock the doors and fit inside the ignition but will not start the car. This is the reason for said green key flashing on you dash.

100 at the dealer for a new one unless you disable the immobilizer in the rom. (I'm not telling you how though) LOL

without the transponder, the engine will crank but will not fire up. how can you have the key of it was a theft recovery? the chip should be in the key itself not the black plastic. what color is you IX?

car is tarmac black, got it from an insurance auction through ridesafely.com . i had it shipped from one of their holding lots in norcross, ga. when it arrived this key was zip-tied around the steering column. ive had bad experiences with the fort smith dealership, so i always go to fayetteville, however i suppose they could handle something as trivial as making a key/programing a remote... gsrboi, you're a master of the painfully obvious and thanks for wasting a post... to the rest of you, i appreaciate the help and got the answer i was looking for. -al

You wanted to know if the reason your car wouldnt start was due to you not having a transponder key we told you yes. There are ways around it but it isnt something I will post here as for all I know you stole the car the info is ou there though.

Your the one who wasted a post for something that is PAINFULLY OBVIOUS. You knew your EVO had an immobilizer but had no transponder key. Seems OBVIOUS

I wasnt trying to be a *** with my post just was letting you know that was the reason

no, my question was NOT wheather or not the car had an immobilizer OR a wheather or not the key had a transponder. I already know the answer to BOTH of those questions, which should be evident to anyone with any sort of reading comprehention by my initial post. my question was how the immobilizer behaves, in my elise for example, the immobilizer will not even allow the car to crank, which is why i questioned this to be the cause, as the evo will crank, just wont fire. and in your post, you did come off like an ***. "i know how, but im not telling" how else would that come off....

Immobilizer shuts down the fuel injector driver circuit. The chip is in the black or gray rubbery/plastic portion of the key(Black = standard key, Gray = valet key) . It is energized by inductance from the antenna coil around the key hole. Sounds like it needs a new transponder key.

Appologies. I meant it funny by saying I'm not telling as I feel its not something that should be put out there as common knowledge. Its hard to tell somones demeanor over the wonderfull internet sometimes. No hard feelings man.

Yes the EVO will crank but not fire same with hondas. No expierience with Lotus's though.

Peace and 100 bucks will get you running
