Someone backed into me
Someone backed into me
Well, technically, two people did. First time was yesterday at work. I parked right in front of my office and while I was outside making a call, I saw a lady in a Jetta give the front of my car a little lovetap and proceed to pull a U and park on the other side of the street. I calmly inspected my bumper for damage and decided not to be a douchebag when I noticed there wasn't any whatsoever.
Lucky me, eh? But ****ty things usually don't happen in ones, so fast forward a few hours. Parked right in front of a nice little restaurant to have dinner with my girl. We ate outside and I could see my car the entire time, which makes this even worse. I can't believe I didn't see it happen, but you know how it goes when you're having a conversation.
Walked to my car to find a silver Tacoma a few inches in front of my bumper. I'm hoping maybe he just got close when he was parking, so I backed up a foot to inspect for damage. And I found some. Paint scraped off the very edge of my hood and one side bent in noticeably. And this at the EXACT same height as where his bumper ended. I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that he did it. None. Zero. Zip.
Well, I think to myself, I'll just wait for him. This is around 7 o'clock. So my girl and I wait. And wait. And wait some more. I start to realize that either the person lives in the area and went home or he/she is avoiding me. I call my insurance and ask what to do. They say to get the person's info. We wait some more and I start feeling bad for making her wait so long. So I call non-emergency Chicago PD to file a report.
Cop shows up. Looks at my hood. Asks if I actually saw the guy hit me. I say no, thinking then he would have asked why I didn't talk to the guy myself. He says I can't prove it was the guy, even though I explain to him that it couldn't be anyone else. This happened in like a half hour window and his bumper lines up EXACTLY with mine. Oh, and there's a bit of white paint on his bumper. Cop says it could have come from anywhere and writes me a report but refuses to write down the other car's info. Instead he writes UNKNOWN under that category. So basically, a useless report. Thank you, Chicago PD.
It's around 8:30 at this point and I've made my girl wait too long. Drive her to her dorm and decide to check if the truck is still there when I'm coming back. Guess what? An hour later, it's gone. Think maybe the person was waiting for me to leave
? Imagine that. Waiting an hour and a half just to avoid the person whose car you knowingly damaged. I do have the person's plate, but I don't think that'll do me any good. If anyone thinks otherwise, I'd love to hear how. Also, the obvious question is whether or not I'll be able to get this repaired or if I have to get a new hood now.
Here are pics from the scene.

His bumper (obviously terrible cell phone pic).

And some better ones of the damage today.

If it comes down to doing something to their car, there are ways of getting an address with a license plate. I'm more concerned about getting the person to pay for my damage.

What sucks the most is that the owner was my next door neighbor and had the ***** to still say hi to me every day. I retaliated, and he never looked at me in the eyes after that.
Unfortunately the police are correct in what they are doing. It's circumstantial evidence and in a criminal court that doesn't mean squat, but if you choose to go the civil court route then circumstantial evidence plays a bigger part. If you choose to go the civil court route you are looking at lost time both through your job and your personal life. My suggestion is to go through your insurance company. Hopefully your deductible isn't more than the cost of the repair.
dang im sorry to hear that happend.
Something similar happend to my stepmom and I a few years ago. We were in her santa fe stopped far back at an intersection, a girl tried to squeeze her car through into the left turning lane and poorly misjudged how much room she had. her car scraped ours and rocked it a little, she stopped dead even with ours looked up at us, shrugged her shoulders, laughed and drove up to the turning lane. luckily the oncoming traffic stopped her from being able to turn, giving us enough time to get her plates.
we went to the police station, they examined the car, saw the scrapes and cracked tail light, wrote a report, then they went out to that girls address and took a look at her car and saw damage that matched up.
i remember it took a reeeally long time, weeks to months, but we had to drive out to Madison WI a few hours away and have some meeting, us and her and her dad and some one else. got the damage paid for and she lost her license for awhile.

Thought you guys might like an update.
Went to the police station to file a hit and run and was told the same thing the first cop told me: no witness, no proof, no other car on report. However, this cop seemed to sympathize and ran the tag for me. I now know the owner's name and address. Using this, I found his phone number in the white pages. I will probably get in touch with him today. I doubt it'll accomplish much, but I'll just let him know I'm going to give his information to my insurance company and have them handle it.
