Carpet soaked, WTF?

We had a lot of rain in Chicago yesterday and my car was parked outside during most of it. I got in to drive to school today and noticed that my shoes were slipping on the metal pedals. So I did what I always do when that happens: wipe my shoes on the floormat. But that didn't help. I looked down to see that the floormat is absolutely soaked with water, and worse yet, so is the carpet underneath it. Nothing else in the car is even slightly wet, just the carpet. And I mean WET. Enough to seep into the floormat even though the bottom is rubber.

All doors and windows were closed/locked tight throughout the storm, before anyone suggests it. So what could it be? My friend suggested a leak in the door seal somewhere. Is this a common problem for our cars? Anyone ever experience it? I'm going to take it to the dealer to see what they have to say.

you know this may or may not be relevant but driving after sitting in a rain storm a crapload of water would just pour right out from under the dash by my clutch in my old srt4 (read: neon).

since you noticed it after you started driving maybe this is similar and it wasn't wet before you started moving the car around. remember we have big vents on our hoods and last time i checked they weren't waterproof.

there are some wires that come in to the cabin through the firewall (I think they actually come in through the driver's side wheel well).

there is a rubber bung on the firewall that lets these wires connect to stuff behind the foot panel by your left foot. You need to seal this bung good ASAP, because it can corrode the wiring harness and cause all sorts of nasty problems. Search for "electrical gremlins" to see how people have fixed it.

And yes, it was like a monsoon yesterday!!

I think someone posted something similar to this a while back. Forgot what the problem was and can't find the thread right now but look it up.

most american cars do not stop rain from coming in, the seals suck. If you want to stop it replace it with some good seals

It could be the water seals are bad. Check the back rug on the driver side. Its most likely wet too. The water travels toward the front and always stops under the damn drivers side rug. I don't know why. Maybe the car is at a slant? But I had this same situation happen to me with 2 seperate dsms.

take a look at the firewall on the drivers side... The wiring harness from under the kick pannel will get soaked and corrode.. Then random crap like horns that dont shut off, wipers that randomly kick on, and such.......

Take a tub of silicone, and literally wipe it all over the black rubber piece on the firewall... i mean cover the entire thing making sure its a solid seal...

I had the problem about 4 months ago.. Reaked havoc on crap... There is a guy on here that is a Mitsu mechanic and took pictures of repairing one of these cars... Fix the problem quick, otherwise you have a crap-load of problems to come down the road....

Do you have a sunroof? If so, check that first. Also check the weather stripping on the door.

I would look into the fenderwell wires. I had the exact same problems 2 weeks after i bought my evo brand new. I took it to the dealer and they looked at it and found that the gromlet was loostand allowed water to get through, and at the time that it happened it didn't even rain very much. The mitsubshi dealer near me is a really good place, they replace the carpet and my floor mat o my drive side, and sealed up the loose wires.

It hasn't happened since.

Good luck

it's you draining system which is located were your wipers are at. some times when you park under a tree that throws alot of leaves it starts to plug up. so when your car is parked for some time in the rain water starts to build up causing it to leak by the firewall. so in order to stop that from happing you need to take off the cover were the wipers are at take high pressure air and try to blow everything away.

i too had a similar problem on my passenger side footwell within a month of buying my evo. Same symptoms, after a rain storm there was literally about 2 inches of standing water in there and under the seat going towards the rear footwell...i used a shop vac and sucked it out and it was ok till the next rainy day...Same puddle
So i took it to the dealership after reading some thread about someone having the same problem, and it being an issue with the rubber grommet where they just drill a hole to put the MR boost gauge line through and don't properly reseal it...

dealership found that exact same problem and sealed it for free, and gave me new carpets.
except they told me the leak was due to my aftermarket boost gauge
