Hypnotig,

I had them all: Evo 8 MR, EVO 9 GSR and the 335i Coupe. All of them purchased new from the dealers inside showrooms(not parked outside) and the BMW ordered custom built from the factory and delivered to Tucson .

None of the 3 cars will dissapoint you. The Evos has the edge on handling but lack in other comfort aspects. To be fair you must always also remember that they are in two different prices leagues.

As per acceleration straight line out of the box, I would certainly say the BMW is marginally quicker. As per braking, despite the Evos having the Brembos the BMW actually ties on braking, the BMW 13.6" front rotors and 13" rear do a heck of a job.

An Evo is a raw sport sedan while the BMW is a well finish sportcar. The BMW has a modern on board computer that tells you everything, even maintenance periods and many many other parameters. It is also very quiet car when on the hwy. It does 2400rpm at 75mph while the Evo is doing roughly 3500rpm which equals to more noise. The finish of the two cars are day and night, specially the inside. This is not new but the Evo looks like plastic interrior and the BMW doesn't but again remember that a Evo is $10000 cheaper

The Evos are very very easy and cheap to mod, you can get into the engine bay and do some serious mods without having to tear the engine apart on the other hand the BMW engine bay is more compact and there is no much room to do things..and off course things are a bit more expensive.

Gas mileage hands down the BMW win. Comfort the BMW wins. Warranty the BMW wins.

If you had the money right now I would give you this advice: If you are looking for the Evo buy the regular Evo and not the MR, that extra price tag is very questionable.

If you are buying the BMW get it with Steptronic transmission and Sport package.

As we speak you can make 60whp/90-100lbtq extra on a 335i with under $1000. On the Evo you can also get great gains for cheap. I found that the BMW insurance is significantly cheper than the insurance on the Evos. If you have any more questions PM me.

If you wonder why I no longer have the cars, the Evos were very cool to have but we weren't happy on road trips, not havinga cruise control was a pain. The Evos had both exhaust and were also noisy on road trips specially at HWY rpms were the drone was audiable. Gas mileage was mediocre (city or hwy). Cops were following us everywhere, being harrassed. On our Evo 9 we had to replace the clutch, the tires and the brakes at around 12000-14000 miles, compared to previous cars this was shocking... The Evo 8 MR I let her go with 17k miles having to do tires at 10000 miles, clutch at 13000 miles and the 6th gear didn't work.

I drag race a lot and I was putting a good beating on the Evos, I decided to add a 2G DSM to the garage and make it a drag car, then the we got the VW gli for traveling and daily commuter then the Vette Z06 is my mid life crisis cure

The BMW I loved but I wanted even more power and the car lacked of rear LSD. I should have never traded that car but I traded for something I think and believe it was a step up (Z06).

Good luck!

Carlos

Top speed too?. Even with some mods out of the box a stock Evo is more limited due to the gearing , the drivetrain loses and the aerodynamics, in contrast the 335i are geared much much taller stock. Top speed runs are more favorable to the BMW which not only has the right aerodynamics but also the right gearing for higher top speed.

Some modding on the Evo will increase the top speed but again, it is not geared for really high top speeds.

evo down low, 335i up top regarding which is faster. In a stock IX I've been able to get them pretty good but at the higher speeds the 335i is a whole other animal.

On the track hands down the evo (as stated many times over)

another thing to consider is upgrades and the costs associated. Its a bit cheaper to make an evo faster.

HERE IS MY .02 .....

1) First of all, this isnt a fair comparisson! you are all comparing a car that has been discontinued for 3+ model years, and a brand new car! At the least you have to compare the 335i to an X, not VIII/IX.

2) When you compare, you can NEVER EVER EVER compare modded cars!! only stock cars! why cant I get this point across? This same point came up in 3 other threads in recent times - when you compare modded cars, you might as well be comparing cars and boats. Modding depends on personal taste, available money, and what many other circumstances allow each individual. So when one guy says my built Evo is faster than your modded 335i, you end up with a stupid argument!
What you CAN say, if you must raise the topic of "modding", is that one model is in general more mod-friendly than the other... AND NOT just say "my modded car is faster than your modded car".

3) If you insist on comparing two different cars, at least make sure you got similar type of vehicles. HERE, you are comparing an AWD sedan, to a RWD coupe. why ?? how could that be a realistic choice for most average consumers? Why not compare the Evo to the 335Xi sedan, wouldnt that make a bit more sense ?

4) Now that we are finally comparing apples to apples, let me tell you what i think about Evo's and 335i's -
in general, if you are looking for a DD, bmw has an advantage and a disadvantage. Its way nicer on the inside, a little nicer on the outside, it has less turbo-lag, which is very important if your daily commute is 2hours of traffic, it offers a warranty that the dealer actually honors (which IS VERY IMPORTANT, cause paying out of your own pocket to fix a 1 month old car SUCKS!!), BUT most importantly the 3 series has that famous precise and firm steering, and that buttery-smooth almost-kinda-does-it-for-you shifting that no mitsubishi can ever match (well hopefully, not ever, but for now, no Mitsu can);
HOWEVER, the 3 series (and every other bmw for that matter) is much less reliable in average every day situations, than the EVO. i know plenty of people who have, or had Bmw's and had to service them more often than they filled up gas.
But the bottom line is that the Evo is less costly (as far as purchase price), far more rare as a vehicle in general, has a better AWD system, more appealing as a sports car, more exciting to drive every day (even if you dont race), it does much better at the track, and in straight line acceleration, it even offers more back-seat space (and many need that) than the 335, and finally, the Evo probably even keeps its resale value better, which some people also consider important.

in the end, to answer the original Q, if you could only pick one, I say the Evo wins! Well, in fact, that was my own choice last year, we decided to get another car, and my choice was just this - Evo or 335i.... and you know what i did

Friend just got a 335i xDrive model last month (AWD), I got my Evo last week. He paid $48K while I paid $24.4K for a used 06 SE /w 25K miles. Interrior: BMW is a lot nicer and has a lot of lexury features. To me though, I don't like the BMW, MB, or Audi too much. My friend is turning into a image jackass (tries to show off iPhone to random people and talks really loud when talking about his car, trying to get attention). To me this is a typical BMW driver. I know this isn't true for everyone but he's a good example. I took a ride in his car and it didn't seem to have as much pull as mine. I don't know if he really got on it or not but it seems like he did.

I love the way my Evo on the outside(except that giant wing). The inside isn't the best but it's not horrible. He'll impress more ladies with his car I'm sure but for me I'd take an Evo over a BMW any day. I also heard that BMW is just horrible with things breaking and insane repair costs. He has a warranty and they pay for 4 years of schedules maintenance though, but they will only change his oil every 15K miles/1 year (recommend)....no way wound I go that long.

All personal preference though. BMW is way out of my price range so I never considered it, so I could be a little biased but I grew up with cheaper cars and like function over form.
