I dont have the thin piece of metal either and never had any problems in rain, sleet, snow, or ice.

i never cover mine.. the belt will scream a lil bit if its really wet but other than that its never been an issue

never had problems with mine. i've had it since jan 06 and been through LOTS of snow and rain. never covered it once.

i dont cover mine, i have that stock metal thing in there... i also powerwash my engine bay, no problems
