Rear fender cut? Wrong Move?
Rear fender cut? Wrong Move?
I was planning to get my rear fenders cut tomorrow. Until i saw a thread on the DIY section. Here is the comment.
Any feedback?
Take this as however you wish:
but whatever you do, NEVER CUT YOUR REAR FENDERS
Your evo uses unibody construction, it consists of 2 folded/welded pieces of body steel. Cutting the lip releases the front and rear sheet of the car, which in turns separates the unibody.
You will induce body flex and basically kill the structural integrity of the car. If you dont believe me, ask any Chassis specialist and/or body shop.
Rolling is the safest bet because the steel stays intact. For those of you who have already cut the fenders in the rear, ever wonder why you had to cut through a sandwich of layers????

eh? i cut my rear fenders. im glad i did. Voltex rear widebody needs to have fenders cut, if people are using these kits in extreme races with extreme lat G's then i know im not gonna mess mine up anytime soon.
I wouldn't cut them but you're car isn't going to fall apart either. Most fender wells are spot welder to the inner wheelhouse. It does offer some support but your big issue could be quaterpanel flex. You are releasing a very large portion of the the quater panel that is held in place. I would roll them which by folding them will "Work Harded" them and make them strong. But thats just my .02 cents as an autobody tech.
I'm assuming you're going with overfenders?
If so, you will have to cut the fenders. just cut the exterior part of the fender.
This will leave the inner fender well to be longer then the exterior.
just fold the inner fender well over the outer one, and weld.
voila... 3" of fender gone...but still seals out water + welded....
Place over fender over the surgery.

It really depends how much you are cutting. I got my fenders cut only where my tires were rubbing. It was such a small area, we are talking about a couple mm max.
I dont think it affects the structural integrity of the body since the small area that was cut was not welded together. The two pieces separated as soon as it was cut off.

I decided to roll the fenders instead. It was a breeze. Just have to make sure that they are heated up and roll alittle, tighten it up, then roll again. No dents or creases. I am a happy boy! hehe
