No problems with evo.
WOW! Im glad I read this post. I have been searching the forums and found lots of people with synchro troubles. Seems that it really isnt a big deal after all. Oh yeah 400 miles and no problems here, I just got car 3 days ago.
It took 11k miles for the 5th gear syncro prob to surface on mine. My car is in the shop right now getting a newly designed syncro sleeve installed. There is a TSB on this problem and it is covered under the warranty.
I seem to have the normal minor problems, chips on body behind left rear door, brake shake on highway, 5th gear syncro when shifting in to fifth gear when rpms are high. I assume all of this would be warrenty. I just haven't took it in because I don't want them to try to void the warrenty for the mods the car has. Mods are HKS RS intake, Greddy Type S BOV VTA, and a full 3in exhaust. Anyone know if they would void the warrenty for those mods even though the problems I would go in for not related to the mods. Miles on the car are just below 20k.
I have had numerous problems with my '03 EVO VIII...I have 15,000miles on the car...it is my daily driver and already I have had the transmission redone (5th gear, 2nd gear, and my synchros) also I have had my clutch, flywheel, pressure plate and my front bushings replaced...all of this was done with the factory warranty...and the paint on my front caliper is flaking off !!!
and they wont replace it because they say it is "cosmetic damage" ...so I have had massive problems with mine....and now fourth gear is grinding as well as fifth....so here i go again....

just about to hit 20K miles.
Problems to date:
- intake hose popped off throttle body twice
- annoying buzzing at low rpms from somewhere in the engine compartment (just started doing it)
- 2nd gear grinds at high rpm shift
- 5th gear just now starting to grind, will have to talk to my dealer about it
- "rpm rise" problem shifting at high rpm/boost from 4th to 5th
Good news to date:
- still on stock clutch, no signs of letting up
- still on original brakes
- still on original tires (with some tread left)
- faster than ever

I have 15,222 miles on the stocker. 286whp 305wtq. Exhaust goes in tomorrow. I learned stick on this car (which sucks) last year. I Was a slow learner.
In that time:
3-4 semi-launches. A) out of fear B) out of frustration.
Twice, i experienced weird clutch behavior where i would ease it to about 1500-2000 rpms to shift into first, wouldnt go...just kept with it until it caught...car wouldnt go when in first gear...let her cool down some, and it was fine.
Some disc banging - Lately it will feel like the clutch is engaged and its not and ill get the banging of plates...
Practicing shifting faster - of course some abuse to the clutch.
Cold starts first gear can be crap until it warms up.
I figure the clutch could easily last me to 50 or more, but i am getting annoyed with the characteristics of it in the morning and will be replacing it in the summer.
I take it as, not beating crap out of it, but taking it up to some nice speeds, opening her up on stretches of highway to the speed limit or above and then going back down...not being gentle around turns...etc.

I had 22,xxx miles on my 2003 Evo GSR when it was totaled. I drove the **** our of that car, but it still had the stock clutch, stock tires, stock brakes, etc.
No, I never launched. Why would I want to drag race an Evo?
No, I never had shifter grind. I know how to shift a car with cable actuated shift linkage. Fast is slow and slow is fast.
Yes, I would always leave the car in gear when braking.
Yes, I would always let the car heat up for 3-5 minutes in cold situations before driving (and let it heat up for the first 5-10 minutes of actual driving before "spirited" driving.
Yes, I would always let the car cool down before shutting it down. This includes the last mile or so of my drive to be taken at very little throttle and lower-than-3000 RPMs and finished off with 1 minute on the turbo timer.
Yes, I followed the factory break in recommendations. I even changed the oil at 800 miles after "break in", changed the differential and transmission gear oils at 5,000 miles, and then changed them again at 15,000 miles. Tires rotated at every oil change along the way, alignment and balance checked every time.
Now I have a 2004 Evo RS. It seems to be just as solid as the GSR was. Time will tell.
I bought both of the Evos, sight unseen. The first one had 8 miles on the odometer when I picked it up. The second one had 45 miles on it. I can't wait to see how the RS holds up. I have a feeling it will do just fine, since I obviously know how to drive/maintain the car. I'm not being cocky, I'm just saying that too many owners cry about the clutch/transmission on these cars, and I think a lot of it is driver error. Let's see if I got "lucky" again with my second Evo and once again got one that has a "good" clutch and transmission in it.

Almost 12,000 miles and no problems. Never modded, raced, dragged, launched, anything. I still have the original Advans on there and they still have 5/32" of tread. I love my Evo, therefore I baby it. Nothing but the best for it.
By 12,000 miles on my 02 VW GTI I had blown 2 coil packs, the driver's seat had fallen apart at the hinge, and the passenger-side side skirt fell off. I hate VW.
