Salted roads during the winter - solutions??

I just moved from Portland Oregon to Marquette Michigan, which is in the upper peninsula. They salt the hell out of these roads during the winter and I am scared to even drive it.

What do u guys do during the winter assuming u dont garage it?

This salt eats cars alive. They rust soooo bad around here its crazy!!! What are the solutions u have tried / cost?

Does anyone live around here or know of any tuners around here?

In addition to Richard's post, you could get a beater and just drive it when the roads are salted.

If that's not an option, just wash your car everytime after you drive on the salted roads.

a nice undercarriage car wash everytime to go out. a "thin" undercoating spray should also help from stone/rock/rock salt spray.

Another important thing to note is that when you wash your car in an attempt to get the salt off you can actually cause more harm than good. What happens is the salt mixes with the water and now that its in a liquid form it is able to seep into almost any area imaginable.

This has always bothered me. I dont drive my evo in the winter too much but when I do, the first thing I want to do after is wash off the salt. Besides an undercarriage spray there must be some other solution to the salt crisis.

I bought a 5 gallon can of a product labeled "Consel Cear M" many years ago and used it on my second generation Trans Ams that came from the factory bare metal on the bottom. One of these cars is still being driven by my niece. It has no rust.

Using this stuff (an oil product) is no fun. You raise the car and mask off anything you don't want oily. Then fill a paint gun with the product, don a paint suit, painter's mask, and goggles and go at it to the underside of the car. The oil will stay on sheltered parts of the car forever but washes off of fender wells in about a year. You also need to spray the cavities inside the body.

It tried a Google search for Consel Clear M3 but got no hits. The stuff is or used to be made by Pittsburgh Paints for use on ocean going vessels. Any part of the car coated with this oil would remain rust free. Yeah, it makes the undersides oily and dirty.

Get this http://www.corrosionx.com/marine.html

Spary it all over the place and voila!
I'm a boat dealer and trust me this thing is amazing against saltwater.
It will make also sticky and dirty since you are going to drive in mud but it is very easy to clean with some grease off products.

The only way to fully avoid it is to get another vehicle to drive. You can get a first gen impreza rs for 3500. Just put some snow tires on it and your good to go.

Buy a 4wd dodge ram50. Still a mitsu, cheap as hell, and saves your evo.

Def get snow tires. They get some snow in the UP.

Wash often. Undercoating is a good idea.
