What gear around 80mph (5 speed)?

If your cruising along at 80 mph in 5th gear and go WOT would u get better acceleration down shifting to 4th or staying in 5th ( where rpms are around 4K which is where i feel the most pull per rpm)? Tried the butt dyno but i can't tell.

i always like to downshift...my tune is kinda aggressive and dosent like 5th gear pulls too much....too much load at a low rpm makes my car knock

It really depends on how you're tuned, OP. Look at your graph (if tuned) and go from there. Likely, you'll be in a better part of the band if you downshift. Of course it is possible that your boost would spike and then go lower at that rpm too, which is why I say reference your tune.

I would get some sick surge at 3600 if i tromped on it in 5th.

I would down shift.

theres no such thing as hitting it too fast, what method of boost control are you using? and who tuned the car?

if im at 80mph im at about 3600-3800 rpm in 5th, you dont do WOT in 5th unless you just took 4th to redline, its alot of load on your engine for no reason at all

i would downshift, but before you do that go get a new tune

1 tank of premium fuel = $35
Well Tuned Engine = $150
Downshifting + rev matching with open road ahead = Priceless

depends on the scenario. If im next to something fast and wanna go then ill down shift.
Honestly i dont think i have ever really downshifted on the highway. The turbo pulls strong in 5th from a cruise to be honest

You need to have the car looked at.

downshift to 4th. Anything under 4000 rpm (in 5th) will surge/knock... If your at 80, you should be ~ 3500 - 3800, you could just go ~70% throttle till you hit, 4000then go wot...

You guys are really making our cars sound like a giant Pain in the ***/disaster. You have to take caution and be fearful of going WOT in 5th gear on a stock car!?

"Sorry man I can't floor it in 5th, I'll knock or get surge and possibly blow up the planet."

<shrug> I hammer it in 5th all the time and my knock light, as well as my logs, aren't bothered by the move.

it all depends on how aggressive the tune is

as far as the boost surge, you might wanna get that looked at

I agree with the last couple posts on the 1st page. You should be able to go WOT in 5th (6th, for me) and it is even good to do that in low rpm occasionally (unless you really are knocking, then you might want to look into that). BTW - I don't consider 4k low rpm so the problem the OP had is definitely funky if it can be repro'd.
