If anything, get a new Ralliart. AWD, same engine as the X, way cheaper to mod if you ever get the urge again, and more reliable. I almost got a GTI as a daily a couple years ago - until I started reading on the VW forums about what a POS those cars are.

They're direct injected, their PCV oil separation system sucks, and they get build-up on the intake valve stems that there's no fuel to wash off, so it just keeps building up. There are pics of guys with like 3/4" diameter carbon build-up crap on their valve stems with like 60k on their engines.

That's just one example of the issues they have. They're also notorious for eating the cam followers that their high pressure fuel pumps are driven by. Not to mention electrical gremlins. The scary thing is with all the headaches everyone has, most owners seems to just accept it as part of the experience.

Mid-way through '08 they actually replaced the FSI engines with the revised TSI design that uses a timing chain, an IHI turbo instead of the previous KKK, revised oil separation, better high pressure fuel pump cam drive design, and many other changes. The only problem is, it hasn't been out long enough for any new issues to surface (though I have heard that the new turbos were failing). Also, the MKVI is due out very soon, so if you were to pick up a MKV now expect it to lose $5k in resale within a few months.

GTI is garbage no power weight's like a pig!!!

Plus you don't have 4 door for that easy getting in and out , ohhh yea you don't have 4wd system for that great handling in the snow and rain, the list goes on and on.......

i dont think the OP is looking to push 40psi and make 700+hp,it sounds like he just wants a ''sporty'' family car

the evo IMHO is a lil beyond ''sporty''

I have owned 8 Vdubs. I am a euro guy. I still have my VW R32. I love the car. I had an S4 as my daily and that thing gave me a ton of issues.. So I sold it and the Vdub became my daily.. My girlfriend told me I should look into the Evo. Now coming from VW/Audi the lackluster interior of the Evo was of no interest to me. As well as the boy racer look. I have a 4 year old and riding around in the back of my R32 was getting to be a pain. She fit and all but my car is set up for the track, road course not 1/4 mile.

The evo started to grow on me. I drove one and I was hooked. Finally picked up an 06 IX MR. I love the car. Its so much fun to drive. As far as working on it. The evo is 100 times easier to work on than a VW. And parts are not nearly as expensive. Parts for my R32 are insane.

I hated my GTI when I would put power to the Front wheel. The tq spin is awful and getting it to hook is impossible even with minor tweaks.

Are you looking at the 4 door GTI? Its a nice car but its not super sporty. its a comfy car and the interior is nice but they are expensive for what they are. Just my opinion.. If you have any VW questions hit me up been in the scene a long time. I would keep the evo..

I doubt that I'd trade mine in, but the thought has crossed my mind to "downgrade" to a GTI. I think it would be a less dangerous family vehicle, while still being "fun".

TIA
Only the driver can make it a less dangerous family vehicle. If the driver is dangerous, no matter what vehicle he/she is driving, that vehicle will become dangerous.

90% of this forum is filled with idiots, just look at the comments in this thread. Take your Evo's out of your *** for a moment and read what the OP's intention was in contemplating the switch.

Anyway, both Steve93Talon and thedru13 are spot on. Great input.

I agree, some comments just don't make sense and don't explain why he should stick with the Evo.

Personally, I've seen GTIs around the streets and they just look like a hot hatch you want in your driveway while the Evo sits in the garage. Sat in one while someone was driving and the comfort of the seats and stock suspension is just awesome. Fell asleep in it too. As for trading for a GTI, IDK. You might be slower and only FWD but you get VW quality. The quality of the car doesn't feel flimsy as some of the things in my Evo. It's just solid and smooth. It's really up to you OP if you want to trade or not. Just be prepared for harder work on the car as it's a little harder to mod them.

Steve93Talon - Thanks for the info, I did not know some of those things. It would be the MkVI (probably in the summer of 2010), so I'll keep an eye on their forums once they come out to see what issues they have.

SOEuro - Exactly.

thedru13 - It would be a 4-door MkVI with DSG and a reflash. For the price (although expensive), I can't think of another alternative that's built as solidly or that has as nice of an interior.

EVO8emUp - True in theory, but the Evo does make you drive a little bit faster than you would in another car, and take corners a little bit faster than normal. That can't really be helped...

Piro Fyre - Sounds like you get it too. Yeah, that was my impression of the MkV too. The quality of the interior and the solidity of it impressed me too.

Thanks for the replies guys!
