Has anyone traded in their Evo for a GTI?
get the VW rabbitt, that was a greal little car. I had one for a couple of months (3) great winter car and its a mini tank. There is not much in the mod dept. for the Rabbitt but it is a nice DD. The GTI is a nice car as well but they are a major pain to wrench on. They are sensitive when it comes to mods.
LMMFAO at this. Don't be so bitter man, it's only a forum.
VW's I see constantly at my work. There has not been ONE VW that has came into the shop that has not had oil saturating the under side.
You obvoiusly can't compare the GTI to the Evo in terms of performance. The GTI is a much more comfortable car, with a MUCH nicer interior and overall fit and finish.
The GTI is a great car on it's own accord. VW's in general do have reliability concerns, but the GTI has been pretty good reliability wise (in comparison to other VW's). There have been some issues with VW's using the 2.0 TFSI, but the GTI's have been pretty solid ( couldn't say the same thing about the Mk6 Passat).
The upcoming Mk 6 GTI looks great. It is pretty much a Mk5 with a major facelift. This is not a bad thing, as the Mk5 is an excellent car. VW decideded that they had a great product, and didnt need to change it.
The biggest negative with the USDM car IMO is that it doesn't get the pneumatically controlled dampers the Europeans will get. Otherwise, the Mk6 GTI will be a very slick car. You may want to wait for the R20.

Enough of this bickering.
You get the Evo to go fast, dont give a crap about gas or comfort. If you don't like it, get a VW.
Just about any other car on the road is more comfortable than an Evo. 'Nuff said.
I bought the Evo not for the comfort, but to go fast.

Good luck with your decision.
my brother has the 20th anniversary edition with the 1.8T and is running 20 lbs of boost, it is nice but the tourque steer is INSANE and all the thing wants to do is spin the tires, you end up spending your drive trying not to spin the tires or fight the tourque steer
If you do get a GTI, whatever you do, just don't buy a 1.8t. They're sludge factories. I have yet to see a 1.8t w/o sludge problems. The 2.0Ts are OK. The FSI fuel pumps suck. Its a camshaft-to-bucket issue. The new TSI engines have the roller rocker on the exhaust cam now, with 4 lobes as well.

I have a 98GTi 2.0T (since 2001) and its spin torque steer city.... anything over 230wtq before 4k even with an LSD and sticky tires is no fun.....of course it all depends on your intensions, if you don't plan to make that type of power... just be prepaired to replace your RR pads a lot.
Vw's are nice vehicles for the most part, in my opinion their reliability has increased over the past few yrs, although they now also tend to have more brake issues.
