Hood Vent in Winter
Hood Vent in Winter
What are you people going to do in the winter when it snows for the hood vent? I plan to buy a plastic or metal piece custom fitted and slip it over. I am running an HKS intake and dont feel like sucking in snow in the morning.
yea i dont like letting my car even sit out in the rain due to the hood vent... If its out long at a friends, I will usually cover it up with a garbage sack. No sense in getting your head/manifold soaked day after day.
I wouldn't dare cover that up. Proper auxillary air flow is critical for cooling the car down when it's not moving. Anything that hits that vent will melt pretty much instantly, and your HKS is so far off to the side there's no worries about it sucking anything in. I'm not worried about it personally.
Naa even the garbage sack doesnt melt it. I usually put it on a while after the car has been sitting. It shouldnt matter anyway. Ive had two other 4g63 cars and they all had solid hoods =P
Oh and for the intake - My open air element always got wet just from rain. I put the stock box back on because I was tired of looking at my wet air filter after just a quick trip into town. Gotta love the Seattle weather....

Since engine already gets totally soaked when you drive it in the rain, putting a bag over the vent to keep the water out when it sits seems like a useless exercise to me.
That water that sprays up from the ground is much more damaging than the rain water that would trickle in from the top. Just think of the rain that comes in from the vent as a free engine rinse...to wash off the salt and roadgrime.

I'm not worried about water, I'm worried about ice over the night. It can't be good going from frozen to melting very fast. I currently keep my car in a garage every night, but I'm moving to a place without a garage and not sure if I'll be able to rent one, plus I live in a hotel during the week, and none of the hotels have covered parking.
I know all engines get wet when you drive while it's raining, how else would the engine bay get so dirty. If the hood vent get's covered in ice, then it will take a while for everything to melt. I'm sure the car will still work, but it's gotta be better for it, to stay dry as much as possible. I don't think a garbage bag will work during the winter, because what will you do when it freezes to the paint?
Not sure exactly what I'm gonna do just yet, but we will see.

If you still have the baffle in place under the screen, I would doubt that any snow will get onto the engine.
Water mostly just runs right off the engine. So I would doubt you will have to worry about it pooling anywhere then freezing up at night.
If ice built up in the vent, it'll melt off as soon as the engine gets up to temp. Having it there will harm nothing.
Remember, the Evo has existed for many years in Japan. And they have cold winters and snow also. If ice build-up on the vent was a problem, we would know about it.
Cars are made to handle these sorts of weather changes. I wouldn't sweat it if I were you.

If I am here in VA during the winter, I'll drive my Evo though whatever mother nature throws at me. Snow, ice, rain, hail...whatever.....and the car will still look perfect in 3 years.
