HIT and RUN wtf??

Three weeks ago I was driving to work on a friday morning around 9:15, I notice this smoking SILVER Dodge Stratus (looked like a stratus to me) with a BANGED up front end flying up behind me.. after nearly hitting me he cuts into the left lane and speeds away on the highway (695) and I take 83. I didnt think anything of it at the time except... look at that asxhole.

Around 3:30 that day, I get a call from XXX insurance company TELLING me that my car was involved in a hit and run around 9:30 in the morning and they have an eye witness with my tag number and that a SILVER car was involved. He then asks where was I when this all happened and if I had a SILVER car? At first I thought this was all a joke until he asked me to write down a claim number and that he'll have a claim adjuster come look at my car for damages and to take picutes.

At this point I'm in shock and think this all is a big joke, but none the less I go out to the parking lot to take pictures of my front end. After hours of pure shock I get a call from my step father around 5:00 informing me that the state trooper that wrote the police report was at my house looking for my car and me!

I promptly called the state police and asked them what I'm suppose to do, I was never in an accident that day and have no idea what's going on. He told me to leave a message with the reporting state trooper, so that's what I did.

He calls me back 8:00-8:30am saturday morning and asks if I can bring my car up to the precinct. After looking over my car he sighs and says "If you got this car fixed you have a better body shop then we do" and "from the damages I seen on her car (the one who was hit) and your car, I cant say that this car has been in an accident at all." After popping the hood for him to inspect for any damage, I guess to the radiator/turbo/front end of my engine, he lets me go saying to have the insurance company call him and he'll let them know my car doens't look to be in an accident. He also noted that the car was spewing out smoke... my car doesn't smoke at all... never has.

The claims adjuster came and looked at my car and said the same thing the trooper did, that my car has no front end damage. I gave her his card and told her to call him and he'll confirm what she already knows.

Fast forward to today when I called the insurance company to see if they finally gave up and that they have the wrong guy.. BUT NO they still want a voice recorded testimony and my time-sheets from my employer of the day of the accident. Judging from the troopers say of the accident my front end would have been obliverated bumper/intercooler/radiator and even the turbo..

I KNOW it was that SILVER Stratus that hit that car... it was smoking, it had tremendous front end damage and he was driving like an idiot, fast and like he was running. I told the trooper what I had saw and he said without a tag it's useless..

Sorry for the rant and for the long drawn out story but it's frustrating... I've attached pictures of the front of my car the day they claimed I hit someone.. these photos were taking by my iPhone at 3:40ish

I'm sorry to hear that but what are you looking for in this forum? It sounds like you did everything within your power; spoke with police who confirmed your story, spoke with insurance adjustor who also confirmed your story.

Wow, if this ever happened to me, I would be very annoyed by all this. The guy that got hit is really pushing the insurance company to find the car that hit him so he can get money to fix his car. Sucks that you were at the right place at the wrong time. Hopefully, you'll get everything settled and the insurance company doesn't have to pursue money from you.

This kind of stuff happens frequently. Witnesses seem to remember their own version of the truth regardless of how it pertains to factual evidence.

what's scary is, what if you had some minor prior front end damage or something. You would be screwed right now for something you didn't do. The system is lame... Basically, if my car gets damaged, I can drive around till I see another damaged car, take his plate number and blame it on him??? Why didn't the guy who is accusing you of hitting him try to stop you or call the cops immediately?

How did they get your plate number to accuse you of a hit and run? That's just weird. Good luck with everything!
