My cousin is a mechanic at BMW and from his stories the e46 m3 is a amazing car runs strong and has a great motor but they seem to have a lot of electrical problems... He had a 335i for 30k miles traded it in for a 335xi... He didn't have any issues with the car beside the normal (high pressure fuel pump)... Other cousin has a e36 m3 no problem at all and myfriend had a e46 m3. He got so fedup with it that he sold it for 12k just so it could leave his hands cause it was more at the shop then in his possesion... Me personally I wouldn't trade the evo for a BMW. Don't get me wrong there nice cars but the repair bills is what's keeping me away from them

I have both, an EVO VIII and a 2002 BMW M3.

The 2 cars are NOT in anyway shape or form comparable. These 2 cars have ZERO in common.

Its really what you WANT out of the car.

If you want performance and ONLY performance then stick with the evo.

If you want a little bit of everything then you get the M3.

The M3 will never perform like the Evo (well not NEVER but I'm talking about within reasonable means and street-ability)

The M3 will hurt your wallet, even if you change your own oil its 100 bucks, little things like that add up. DIY can save you money thats for sure.

Aftermarket for the E46 is an absolute joke. 1100-2200 for Catbacks that do NOTHING but make noise. 3xx.00 Intakes that do NOTHING.

The evo is kinda like the best sex you ever had but had to deal with lots of snapping fingers, side to side head action and "where the **** were you" kinda girl.

The M3 is like GREAT sex, not the best but very good and you can take her home to mommy.

wow both are very nice cars. depending on your age and where you are in life it all depends, if your older and have a family the bmw would be more classier but the evo is an amazing car, i wouldnt give mine up for anything!!

my brother's got a Z4M, for those of you who aren't familiar with the car, it's a z4 with a s54 (the e46 m3 engine). i've also driven a 6spd e46 m3 multiple times

the throttle response is amazing, and the engine screams to redline, and pulls pretty hard progressively towards redline starting from around 5500rpm. the progressive power build up is very addicting, and the aural entertainment is pure bliss.

however, it's very difficult to make quick. my former bolt-on IX would obliterate one (bolt on = catless TBE + tune) from any speed, and my current pig of a X with nothing but just a tune is completely even with the Z4M from 40-110mph (done on a closed track, of course) after which he walks pretty steadily.

the m3 is a beautiful blend of luxury, comfort, and performance. but the Evo will walk all over it with minor performance mods, and if that bothers you then the Evo is very tough to beat.

M3 pros:
1) throttle response
2) off the line torque
3) comfort, luxury, blah blah
4) rwd handling feel (not necessarily superior handling), which to me feels much more pure

M3 cons:
1) difficult to make quick
2) more expensive parts

Evo pros:
1) dirt cheap to make stupid fast
2) awd
3) rear doors

Evo cons:
1) turbo lag
2) turbo lag
3) turbo lag
4) due to reasons 1-3, no torque off the line, and that used to drive me APE**** nuts
5) rides like a tank (relatively speaking)

of course, if your pockets are pretty deep, pay HPF a visit and slap on a turbo kit or two on your e46 m3 and call it a day. that is currently my dream set up, to be honest with you. something about the inline 6 in that baby just floats my boat.

i'm sure in the previous 5 pages that I did not have time to read somebody urged you to test drive an m3 already and you most likely already drove one. if it stirs your soul then get it, if not then...eh...if you aren't already, feed your Evo some e85/100+oct goodness and stop thinkin about the m3
