They are two totally different cars, the choice will come down to personal preference and what you plan to do with the cars. I daily drive a 2004 e46 m3 and I absolutely love the car. I kept it stock power wise but I've done a lot of suspension mods (D/A coilovers, all bushings upgraded, etc..), brake upgrade (Brembo BBK), and some minor aesthetic mods. It's a blast to drive on the street and doesn't attract the "wrong" type of attention (police, people trying to constantly race you, etc..).
I do have my eye set on an Evo 9 for weekend fun/track use though. My plan is to build a fast 700whp+ Evo and keep the e46 m3 for daily driving

I had an M3 and it makes a great daily driver and that's about it. It was a huge head turner but the Evo to me is a funner car to drive. The M3 is also a slow turd and very expensive to mod and maintain. If you have to get rid of your Evo to get the M3, you'll probably regret it.

Like others have said...e46 m3's are nice, quick sportscars to drive around in. Upkeep is expensive but not unaffordable if you buy a solid non-smg one.
The reason I stopped ever considering one is because they are garbage on track. They are fun but slow and have loads of problems when you start driving them hard(rear subframe tearing issues, rear trailing arm bushings go out, some have typical BMW cooling issues, the stock brakes get pretty taxed even with better pads/lines)

m3 ftw! I got rid of my evo and got a e36 its a blast to drive..not as fast as the evo in a straight line of course
bmw better weight distribution exp. e36 basically a perfect 50:50 not like 60:40 in the evo and wieghs less. A bmw isn't slow on tracks by any means if its done right but overall its a fun car to drive daily and its pretty damn reliable
