Whining and clunking when turning left....Help!!!
When I am turning left there is a whining noise along with a clunking noise. The whining only used to take place when I was driving my car hard around left hand turns, but now I can barely take a turn at 30 with out it whining up a storm. The whining noise only happens when I am turning left and just recently I noticed when it has sat overnight in under 20 degree weather it will make the same noise at idle but once it warms up it will stop.
At this point I can also get the whine to continue with the rpms after taking a hard left turn then coming out of the turn and driving straight pushing in the clutch and revving the engine, then when I drop the rpms back to idle and put it back in gear the noise will go away. I brought it into a shop to have it looked at and they couldn't find anything wrong with the wheel bearing or the TC. All fluids are good along with no metal filings. The shop seems to think that it is something inside the transmission. I am thoroughly confused and don't want them to rip apart my tranny if they don't need to. Any insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated!!!

Dude you need to have your trans/drive train looked over. I initially thought axle or wheel bearing, but your mechanic ruled that out I guess.
none of what your describing sounds normal. Stop driving the car... Please

No I am not driving it, thankfully I have another car at my disposal at the moment. I actually just talked to the guy I brought it to and he wants me to take it to the local tranny specialist in town to have it diagnosed.

Don't see how it's transmission related since it only happens when turning left or idle at cold? I've know other cars with similar problems when turning and came out to be axles. But since you said it happened at idle... Power steering pump? Belt?

Doesn't sound like tranny if it does it at idle, usually noise when turning one direction means cv shaft/joint. You may want to take it to a different shop. Very glad to hear your not driving her.

Thanks for all your feedback guys! The shop that I brought it to said that they checked all the fluids and said that they were all fine. I decided to check them again myself and the power steering reservoir was really low, so I filled it up and the noise is gone. Note to self...don't go to that mechanic ever again!

check your power steering fluid resevoir, make sure that is not dry.
if that is not the case then the power steering pump could be going back, it happened in my gti after 100k miles, and the symptoms seem the same.
Oh, i now see the issue was resolved. i wish i would have saw this thread earlier because my diagnosis was correct.

i have had the same problem on my evo now for 2 months, and only on left turns i hear the winning noise, but my fluids are ok. You would think that if it was a power steering pump it would do it to the right or left but i will be changing it this week. anyone else lately have this problem?
