2004 rs tranny whines alittle? Is this a prob?

I am looking to buy a evo in Ohio, found a 04 rs with 65k miles. New to the evos so I am not sure... Plus the fact I havnt got to go see it yet. I thought the rs trans were near bullet proof. The guy said all the rs have this little whine??? Any feed back would be nice.

Well if it is an 04 RS then it has a front LSD but no ACD. Most EVO's will eventually whine a little in lower gears at a low speed. This is usually attributed to gear noise and nothing to really be concerned about.

The 5 speed in the RS is the same as all the 5-speed VIII's.

If whine goes away after low speed finejust some trans noise however if it continues throughout rpm range getting louder. You looking at a TC issue

as gsrboi stated

all five speeds are the same

if the whine gets louder with speed it is not normal

ACD is "Active Center Differential". It's the little button that cycles through Tarmac, Gravel and Snow. Being an '04 it might have it. I thought all Evo's after the last half of '04 had it. It might have it, it might not. Either way it's not big deal. Many people prefer not to have it. In my opinion, it's kind of a gimmick.

As far as low speed whine, 100% normal. High speed whine is not normal.

my car has been whining for over a year...This car just whines alot and people get WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to paranoid over whines.

If it's louder then your exhaust or you can hear it when the window is down then you have a problem. If not then just drive it and forget about it.
