Do you disable your clutch switch?
i wouldnt mind doing this for the convenience factor but at the dragway they check for the car starting without the clutch pushed in during inspection..its never been a problem for me because mine is still plugged in but i dont think they let you run like that.
Is there any data to back up the claim that cold start increases engine wear when using modern synthetic oils? Most oils that we use around here (Redline, Mobil 1, and Royal Purple among others) all have relatively high levels of molybdenum dithiophosphate which provides excellent protection in conditions experienced curing cold-start.
I imagine the same people that disable their clutch switches to "prevent cold start bearing wear" as being on the same boat as people that rub crystals to ward off illness and keep gargoyles around their house to scare off evil spirits.
My switch is plugged in, and always will be.

as far as helping evo's, im not sure. they have redesigned bearings and stuff then the 7 bolt dsms. it cant hurt anything if you would unplug it. its not like you will lose any features. the only reason mitsubishi puts it on the car, is because its illegal to have a manual without a switch to where you need to push the clutch down to start the car
There were a lot of theories of what caused crankwalk but everyone pretty much agreed that it was just a bad batch of cranks from the foundry. If you did actually have one of those, yes, you're probably best off starting without the clutch since those cranks experienced more deflection (allegedly) than people with good cranks and starting can be a low-oil condition. Still, if you had a bad one, it was going to walk through normal use no matter what you did to prevent it.
My DSM happily had a 2600 in it for the 70k miles I put on it with no signs of crankwalk. If you're driving a 7-bolt Eclipse or Talon with low miles, you might still have something to fear, but for everyone else "measures to prevent crankwalk" are just rabbit's feet. A lot of current Evo owners are also ex-DSM owners and I think it's fair to say we have a pretty widespread spillover of superstition and fear (especially from the DSM tuner forums) that we no longer need to hold on to.
Sure any car can "crankwalk", but then again I could get struck by lightning. You still won't see me carrying a rabbit's foot on my keyring.
im not saying every 2g has this problem. but this is kinda where it orginated from i assume. i have read about it in a bunch of books and they all seem to recommend unplugging your clutch switch on the 7 bolt motors. i have no experience with the crankwalking dsm's nor do i even know anyone that had one crankwalk. i was just saying what i have read about
Crankwalk is definitely over-hyped. I'm 2g DSM driver and haven't experienced CW, nor do I know anyone who has. I'm on DSMtuners.com daily and it almost never comes up in threads anymore. All that being said, I leave my switch plugged in. I honestly would unplug it, but I just don't trust myself to never start it while in gear. I don't often leave it in gear, but it would only take leaving it in gear one time and forgetting about it to cause bad things to happen. (That's if I also forgot to take it out of gear or actually push the clutch in.)
This. I visit both 'tuners and 'talk and there aren't any new threads about it. All the cars that will walk pretty much have which lends credence to the batch of bad cranks theory. I put 86K miles on my 7-bolt with a 2100, granted not a heavy clutch at all, but still - I had no crank play. I ended up going with a 6-bolt after burning a piston or two because the builder I chose just doesn't build 7-bolts - except Evos.
The EVO was developed as a rally car. Anyone who has done rallying (as I have in the UK) would know that if you car stops in deep water you can crank it out by putting it in gear and turning the key - it won't move if you have to put your foot on the clutch to engage the starter. You never know when that tip will be useful........
I have a question. I don't have an evo, but i do have an evo 8 ecu. Long story short, I have no clutch switch at all in the car, but I want to use a 2 step feature, and I can't seem to locate what pin the 2 step clutch switch is in? unless it is pin 43 on an evo 8 but I think this is maybe for cruise control?
Which switch am I looking for in the schematic? Or if you know the pin on the ecu side of an evo 8 that would be awesome! see attached pic
