So if it is just leaking from the Transfer case one drop per hour or so. Can I just have the Transfer Case fluid changed every six months or so until I get the $$$ to upgrade the Transfer case?

Will it leaking mess up the Transfer case or will it be ok to just make sure it is filled up all the way every six months or so.

If that is true, then that is what I will do, not worry about the small leak and just make sure that the Transfer Case fluid is full.

Thanks,

Guys, most likely that is the axle seal on the passenger side. Mine had the exact leak. The seal costs like 6US and you have to pop the axle out to change it, BUT when my mech tried to put in the new seal it went in WAY to easily. So we figures the T-case may have a factory defect where the seal area is slightly too big and causes a drip. he put some gasket shellac on the outside of the axle seal, put in the new seal and axle, and that was that. No more leak. Almost a year later still no leak.

Someone correct me if Im wrong, but could a leak there allow the two fluids to mix?
Does anybody second this option to put some RTV around where I see the leak coming from? Is this a safe option to do temporarily?

Thanks for the help!

I think it will work temporarily. I would just leave it alone and plan to get the seal changed and fixed as described within the next couple weeks.

***UPDATE ON CAR***

I took it to the dealership and they said that it is not the transfer case that is leaking. They said that they are going to have to pull the transmission out to find out exactly where the leak is coming from. Total cost to pull Tranny out and put it back in comes up to $1,000. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before?

I feel like I'm being taken advantage of. They said that they checked the T-Case fluid and that it was fine. they said it was something like royal purple and that the fluid that is leaking was not the same fluid.

Does this make any sense to anyone? If it's not leaking at the transfer case and it is leaking from the tranny, what could be the problem now?

The car does have an aftermarket clutch but that is it. This whole evo experience has turned into a complete nightmare. kinda wishing i wouldn't have bought this car now.

Here is one scenario out of many:

When they did the clutch, the gasket/seal between the transmission and transfer case could have been compromised. This can cause transmission to leak into your transfer case and the transfer case fluid which ultimately will destroy your transfer case. Does your car whine at all when driving? If so, its classic case of a bad transfer case.

Putting RTV or gasket maker around the area where you pointed out is not going to help.

Its also possible that there is fluid leaking there because there is not even torque on the bolts connecting the transfer case to the transmission. The top bolts are awkward to access and some times the bolts are tightened enough when reinstalling the transfer case as part of a clutch job. I would check this first.

Good luck

no whine at all on the car. Also, do they need to Pull the whole transmission just to do the things you mentioned? It seems kinda fishy like they may have found the problem but are making it look worse than it is, and making me pay my *** off for something not that severe.

Well, too late now, i gave them a thumbs up to pull the transmission to look further for the leak.

this sucks royally.

Well, Unfortunately it gets worse.

I took the car to the dealership and told them where I saw the Fluid leaking. They said they would take a look at it and give me a call. The called me a few hours later and said that the fluid leaking is not transfer case fluid because they checked the t-case fluid and it was royal purple and the fluid that was leaking was not.

So they tell me that they believe it is transmission fluid and that to get a better look they are going to have to pull out the transmission and said it would cost $1,000 to pull it out and put it back in. So I agreed for them to pull the transmission.

The next day they call and tell me that there is a crack in the outer housing of the transmission where the transmission bolts up to the transfer case. So I go in to check it out and surely enough there is a pretty good size crack that is visible. There was also some RTV on the transmission case in the same location that looks to have been put on by whoever pulled the transmission to put in the clutch.

So, it appears as if the transmission may have been accidentally dropped during the installation of the clutch. In doing so, the mechanic tried to cover up the huge crack in the transmission case with RTV.

The total damage report is $2,600 for the dealership to order the new parts for the transmission, do the labor and put the car back together.

Unfortunately after this incident I will be left completely broke and will most likely be selling the car. Bad timing on my behalf to own an Evo and to not do a thorough inspection before purchasing the car.

If this work would have been done to the car before I bought it I would still be driving the car and wouldn't think twice about purchasing it.

$2,600 is a lot to put into a car that you haven't even owned for a month and a pretty bad omen if you ask me.

I had this happen once before when I purchased a used vehicle that had been modified and you would think that I would have learned from my previous mistakes.

Anyway, other than the crack in the tranny the car is a dream, and I will probably be putting it on here to sell. Some lucky individual will get to drive this car the way it was supposed to be driven, not with a cracked transmission.

I will post pics soon of the cracked tranny case.

yeah, tell me about it. Thats ok, life lesson learned and unfortunately me and the Evo were not meant to be. The decision has been made and I am definitely going to be selling it as I simply cannot afford it. Someone is going to get a nice clean evo 8 that will be in perfect shape after the work is done.
