5th gear issue

I know that this has been a known issue but i can't find any useful information on it.

I have been having really bad grinding issues in 5th gear, mainly after getting into it a little in 4th gear. Even when i don't get into it sometimes it will grind. If i am at the track and take 4th to 7000.. it will grind bad or lockout which obviously can screw up a perfect run. I have changed the tranny fluid...putting in amsoil. I did not notice a difference. I tried brass shifter bushing and that smoothed the shifts up but did not correct it. I finally tried a stainless steel braided clutch line and that repaired my second gear problem but the 5th gear problem still exists. Im starting to run out of ideas on what to do.. im trying to avoid the fact that it might be an issue within the trans such as a syncro. Anybody know of any other thigs that could be tries before i go and do anything with the trans

How often do you go to the track? If you go a lot bite the bullet and get a built tranny...worth it in the long run you know

Don't want to have to double clutch. That is just annoying

i had this same problem... i tried new trans fluid, shifting different, but at the end of the day it ended up being the syncos that needed to be replaced. but at that time i traded it in for my X. and i have since talked to the new owner. .. he had to replace the clutch first, then he had the syncros done... and now all is well

Sounds like your syncro is shot and that you have some damage going on so a rebuild is probably in your future....

+1 your syncro is prob going out. is your 3rd a bit notchy too? ive done everything to try and eliminate my 5th grind(few different fluids, ajusting the pedal, shifter bushings). the only thing that works is rev matching.

I have barely over 14000 miles on the car that is why it leads me to believe i should try everything possible before i go rebuilding the trans
