Is catch can need when upgrading to GT35R and does it matter which one?

I am gathering parts for my upgrade to a GT35R on a 03 evo 8. Is a catch can required or just a breather filter? Do they all do the same thing or do some have not enough ports. I know you need one for the valve cover, but some are replacing the pcv valve too.

I was considering the Greddy.

Any help or ideas are appreciated?

Daily driver catch can. Race car can get away with breather. I prefer catch cans in all situations.

Ok, I need a catch can then. Do all of them have enough ports on them to do both the pcv and the valve cover? Or is a catch can for the valve cover good enough?

It really depends. On a DD car I would leave the PCV valve alone, unless you are pushing some serious boost and getting bad blow by. Get an oil catch with two possible ports and just hook one up to the valve cover and vent the other with a small filter, if you are still getting blow by even after this then its time to consider PCV breather options...

for buchnerj

Thank you, I will get a 2 port catch can like the Greddy ect. for the valve cover. My car has 50k miles and I am about to install the GT35R. Hopefully, the pcv valve will be ok then.

Do the PCV valves wear out and do I need to replace it with a new one from the parts store??

I read that I can always add another catch can later or replace it with a double catch can if space is a problem.

If you run a oil catch can with a breather on the top, you can delete the pvc valve.

Thank you for all the replies.

Is this the only cheap option or are there others? I like the polished aluminum look.
That is why I was looking at the Greddy.

A coalescing filter is a requirement, the jcs and the saikou both have a coalescing filter. I like the boiler sight glass on the jcs piece, but prefer the drain on the saikou. I have not seen any other designs with a coalescing filter, and any design without a filter is not very good.

Not to jack the thread but I just got my car built by AWD Motorsports and I had the Greddy catch can hooked up, plain and simple they scrapped it and said it isnt doing anything...

They said that either the line from my valve cover needs to be hooked up to my intake pipe so that the vapor is actually being pulled from the valve cover or that I would have to build a properly working catch can which would run me $300 or more...

So this all has me pretty confused and worried...

I am running E85 now and apparently I will be getting more blow by than someone on pump, I am assuming that this is because of higher boost levels.

I have already taken the intake off with less than 2k miles on the fresh motor and there was a decent amount of residue on the turbo inlet and in the intake pipe where the breather hose is entering which has me really concerned as well...

So long story short if someone would chime in again and explain what the best solution is I would appreciate it because I don't want to trash anything on my car that i just dumped a ton of money into

This is how I ran my Saikou michi setup on the stock turbo. It did a very good job of keeping the oil out of the intake. After installing it and cleaning out my intake pipe I never saw any oil in it again. That was running a 30psi spike and tapering down to 25psi.

Not saying it's the be all end all for everyone but it worked for me and was easy to install.

I like what you did there sho669. I will have to take a look when you get down this way. After doing some reading I feel that the best catch can should involve some sort of filtering media of some sort. The jcsautomation sounds like it has something of the sort. My tuner suggested that I do the quick and easy route. You can use a Fram G4 fuel filter inline between the valve cover and intake snorkel. Works pretty well, only $4 and you can just change it out when you do your oil change. It's got a clear housing so you can see when it's getting filled up. So that's my approach until I find something I want to drop some cash on.
