Buying a used FP Red, what should I look for when I inspect it?
Hello guys,
I'm going to buy a FP Red turbo. I'm meeting with the seller in just a couple of hours. He told me it has less than a 100 miles on it, however, I don't trust anyone and I would like to know what to look for to see if it is really in good condition. Please let me know, thanks in advance

You can easily tell if the turbo is a pile or not.
1. Shaft play - See if the turbine inside moves when easily wiggling it.
2. See if it spins easy without friction.
3. Looks man, look it over. If it's new, it will look new. Ask for an invoice from when he purchased it.

1) Ask what oil was used?
2) Ask what boost the turbo saw?
3) Check for shaft play - whether or not the compressor wheel can be moved (in, out or up and down)
4) Was FP's new oil line used? Was the FP oil filter used?
5) Where was the turbo originally purchased from?
An FP red/black turbo can be damaged by running Mobil One 10W-30 synthetic in as little as 100 miles - this is according to FP, to whom I spoke on the phone last week about this.

i just called FP and also saw this posted on their site
"Do not use Mobil1 10w30 or any other “on
highway” GF-4 oil in your 4G63 motor with any FP high output stock appearing turbo"

is royal purple ok the Run!?!
I will say this. Due to the fact that the FP Red and FP Black use steel on steel thrust bearings here is what I would do:
1) Ask what oil did was used?
2) Ask what boost the turbo saw?
3) Check for shaft play - whether or not the compressor wheel can be moved (in, out or up and down)
4) Was FP's new oil line used? Was the FP oil filter used?
5) Where was the turbo originally purchased from?

I love stuff like that on EvoM. It should definitely be a sticky! Not a lot of people realize journal bearing and ball bearing turbos are different and require different oils and other things. Oh and good thing I have the Royal Purple one lol. I'm going with AMSoil next to see how that goes

One of the other people already posted a PDF in this thread from FP that shows what oils are recommended:
