Debating on buying an Evo..

Hey guys,
Well, Ive been lurking on the forums for about 2 months and decided, "Hey, im going to post" Anyway, to give you an idea about my car background, my last three cars have been an Audi S4 (stage 2+), E46 M3 and now a g35 coupe 6 speed. After driving the coupe for a year, the tuning bug has hit me and I cannot fight it. A friend of mine who owns a 360 and an Evo prefers his evo to his ferrari. This astounded me and I had to drive his car. Well, schedules being what they are, I havent been able to get in the car, but after reading the forums, Ive decided I dont care and want to purchase one The fact is, I trust this guy and he has a passion for cars equal to mine.
Anyway, all this being said, I do have a question about the car and would like to know your opinions if you guys would be so kind My biggest question for the car is saftey. i noticed that the vehicle does not have a formal traction control or yaw control, is this true? What about the braking system, does this act as a yaw control of sorts? Reagrding the airbag system, does the car has curtain airbags of any kind? How does the car fair in a crash?
Forgive the barrage of questions, but if you've read this far, i thank you I look forward to your responses.

well looking from the cars u own, an evo might be a harsh daily driver for you. u will feel a lot of the bumps and nicks in the road and will not be nearly as comfortable as the other cars u have.

but aside from that, this car seems to be a real sports car true this isnt coming from an evo owner but ive been in and around evo's for quite a long time now to tell u that it is one hell of a car..acceleration and cornering is very amazing, and i really think you should take a test drive to see what everyone is talking about

about safety, the evo has good crumple zones in the front and back that seem to decreased the impact that goes to the driver. if you've seen how people drive these cars and see the aftermath, i think u can fairly say that this car is very safe. it doesnt have side airbags i believe but safety is still good. funny thing about these crashes are that the wing almost always does not get damaged whatsoever..dont ask me why

you should really go and test drive one and see the car for yourself tho. always get an impression on the car yourself good luck with everything!

yes i agree with bobaab that the evo will be an harsh ride. i have rode in a g35 coupe cause a friend of mine told me that the ride was harsh for a luxury car but let me tell u that the g35 coupe's ride cant even compare with the evo. but if u have the money then there is no problem cause u can probably afford another car for daily.

In terms of safety, all i have to say is look at all the pics of wrecked evos on this forum. the interior is almost always intact and it seems like it is extremely safe. plus i have never seen a wrecked spoiler so i can garuntee u that the spoiler is reliable for all that matters.

As for traction, this car does not need a traction control. this car will not loss traction easily. simple put i actually had to put some effort into purposely spinning out on a rainy day. so for racing or daily driving purposes, traction will be the least of your problems

Well, to be honest with you, i enjoy a harsh ride in a car, all part of enhancing the connection with the road. I do like the G35, but it does feel like a car that was designed for an older demographic. I am in my mid 20's and have been blessed enough to be able to buy both, but I want to keep my life simple and just have one car. From everything i have read I do not doubt i will love the car Keep the input coming guys thanks!!

From what I have seen -- the car is very safe. Another bonus is that it 'feels' safe also. Visibility is good, and it has a very solid feel in general.

While there are no stability/braking/traction/yaw extras, my guess is that if you already like the harsh ride, you will be able to appreciate the fact that you won't have any extra systems that 'dumb down' the feedback you get from the car.

The only thing about the car that I would begin to refer to as complex MIGHT be the engine. Other than that, powertrain, interior, and overall design remains SIMPLE. The simplicity is one of the main reasons why I LOVE this car.

The best part for me is that when I get married, my wife won't be able to pull the 'impractical' card out of her sleeve and tell me to get rid of it because it doesn't fit into family life. If we have triplets, I'll still be able to transport all of them -- and safely, I might add!

As another side note -- this car is an anomaly for the american car market. Most people in this country would never guess that a four door sedan for around $30K can smoke MOST other cars out on the road -- in a straight line and in the curves. It's fun to see the look on people's faces when you surprise and/or **** them off.

While I've never driven any of the cars you've owned, I would recommend taking the plunge based on my experience. I haven't regretted it...

I'll say this - it's pretty impressive to hear an F360 owner actually saying he prefers his Evo....

Well, I just bought an Evo. A week ago.

I traded my RSX typeS which was only 3 months old with barely 3500 miles. I've been struggling with the notion of whether buying the Evo would give long term satisfaction. I knew in short terms (i.e. a few months, maybe a year) it would be a blast.

Mind you, there was nothing wrong with the RSX; it's just that I prefered a 4 wheel drive car. My previous car to the RSX was an A4. Had it for 5 years and died of a sudden, mysterious engine death!

So after 5 great years with the A4 1.8tQS, I wanted a more economical but fun car, so I got the RSX-S.

Soon I realised that I *might* not have purchased quite the car I wanted, after I heard all the hype and aura about the Evo.

I struggled with the decision for weeks on end, of whether to buy the Evo.

Due to the fact that there are quite a number of Evo's out there at the dealers, and it's closing on year-end, I got a very good deal on my trade-in value AND purchase price.

So, I now drive an Evo. :-)

The question for you, ChandlerBing, is whether you can afford to pass up the opportunity to own one of the most exciting car ever built for mass production.....

The Evo as a daily driver has a feel that reminds me of my old Alfa GTV6 2.5. Mind you, I;m not saying the Alfa is as good, but that it has a feel to it, just not as excellent as in the Evo.

The Evo has that raw power feel, with that slight bit of imperfection here and there, and absolute driver control.

But it can be too harsh for the unsuspecting new owner.

But it can also awe you...

It's also a "flashy" car, so if stealth is what you're after, then you must seriously reconsider.

ChandlerBing,
The only question you’ve posed that hasn’t been answered is whether the car has side curtains. The answer is no. I don’t think the 2004 will have them either.

I took my Evo in for service a week, or so, ago and Rick Case Mitsu still had their demo Evo. If you want to drive one they could probably hook you up. I'm adding this since your in Atlanta too.

Best wishes,
f86sabre

interesting, I may stop by rick case, thanks for the tip! Also, no one has really addressed the traction control issue. I really would prefer this on the car, yet it seems that the braking system and the diff's have this feature, yet mechanically, can someone elaborate for me? thanks!!

No traction control, no active yaw control. It does have Electronic Brake force distribution in addition to conventional ABS. The only time you will have traction issues is if you try to drive in cold conditions (less than 40F) on the stock tires.

it all depends on what u like again i personally dont like subaru or the way the boxer engine sounds for one. It sounds like it is missfiring but they are still good cars.

Ha! I owned an '86 GT-V6. Drove it for two years before it caught fire and burned to the ground (I'm not kidding). I'd have to agree that it had a few similarities with the Evo. Hopefully the electrical system isn't one of them.
