So I decided to stop by the Mitsu dealer today...considering on trading the '03 Expedition in on a EVO8. Well, I've seen the car...and didn't go to talk to the sales people. I wanted to ask the Service Department a question instead.
So I walk up to the Service Writer, and explain that I was considering buying an EV08, and was curious what there "policy" is about the clutch (I've heard everybody here complaining
). Well, the first words out of his mouth was "If it goes @ 6...It goes @ 6!", and that they don't cover clutches under warrenty.
I thought this was funny. I never mentioned "how many miles" the clutch supposedly lasts.... So obviously he knows that the clutch sucks.
Anybody here try and complain with the DOT? just curious....
Well, maybe after the 1st on january, I'll buy that EVO8, and an aftermarket clutch so when I hit 6k miles, I am ready.

What is worse than that is they tell you that if you replace their clutch, which for a lot of people has worn out prematurely, with a better clutch that will not wear out so fast, they will void your powertrain warranty. This is in DIRECT defiance of the Magnussen Moss Warranty Act that was passed in 1975 by Congress. Evidently they figure that no one has the money to contest the refusal of warranty, so they will just keep on doing it. I guess that it is not illegal unless someone can pay to challenge it.
You could always come to an write on paper that you will buy the car under the agreement that the clutch will be covered atleast to so and so miles, and if anything were to happen it would be covered no questions asked. Im pretty sure they wouldnt want to say no to that, knowing you want to buy it. Just get it on paper.

There is no warranty out there that covers the clutch......it is considered a normal "wear and tear" item, and thus not covered....some dealers will be cool about stuff, but in general thats the case....it's like trying to warranty worn tires and brake pads....sometimes you slide, but usually you pay
there are dozens of Evo owners on this board that have 100s of thousands of collective miles with no clutch issues. I don't doubt that some of the first Evos to hit US shores had problems, but I attribute many of the destroied clutches to misuse and abuse.
Yes, the Evo is built to be driven hard. But, there is a difference between driving a car hard, and driving it incorrectly.

I have 9,700 miles, cams, full 3" exhaust, crank pulley, afc2, fuel pump, dynoflash, etc. I pound on the car everyday, and I have the stock clutch with no problems with slipping, just an occasional missed gear every now and then, But I blame that on the loose nut behind the wheel

the clutch is a wearable part like the brake pads and rotors. it would be hard to have a warranty on it and should be in writing.
