I'd walk away. Not worth the hassle. Though if it was a pure track car, who cares since you don't need it registered.

Each state has their own hoops to jump through when dealing with registering slavaged titles. Some states won't do it at all. It's quite possible that the guy is in over his head with it and is fed up. TX changed their process when I was in the middle of rebuilding a wrecked motorcycle I bought off ebay about 6 yrs ago and I had a b*tch of a time getting it titled properly and registered. I was so frustrated at one point that I almost sold it for a huge loss to a guy who parted out bikes on ebay. I had no use for a bike I couldn't ride on the street and it may be a similar situation with your neighbor.

I would definitely look into it as a potential deal, but with great caution and some diligent research. I wouldn't hand over a dollar until I knew exactly what I needed to do to get the title sorted out and determining if it was ever stolen. If you're just looking for a track car you'll still want a title in your name even if it can't be registered. If you're stopped in TX with a car on a trailer and can't provide proof of ownership they can impound your vehicle. In a situation such as this, you'd at least need a bill of sale from the person on the title.

Keep us posted and perhaps we can point you in the right direction in trying to get it sorted out. In TX you can buy a bonded title in instances where no title exist. If you can get the VIN there's alot we can determine from it.

It was raining a lot yesterday so I didn't talk to the guy because I wanted to take some pics. I will try today if it doesn't rain.

With the VIN I will know all the info I need. If it is not stolen I plan on taking the car to a shop so they can check the frame and I will do a engine compression test.

I just talk to a friend of mine in North Carolina, he knows a guy that repairs and resales cars for living, he also buys and sells cars for living. He told me that in NC the car just needs to pass inspection to register a salvage title car. That to register the car I will need proof of residence. He said that I can use his residence address if I need it, If I cannot the car register in SC; I will get a NETFLIX subscription using his address and I just pay it with direct deposit, and use that as proof of residence.

I hoping to get the VIN today, I need to stop day dreaming about the EVO

Run a VIN check, it will tell you if the thing is reported stolen or not. Then I would run a carfax on it.

Make it a race car and haul it around in an enclosed trailer

In NC before you can get salvage title you have to bring your car to special state inspection which usually a police officer and they only have 2 hour windows a day between 8-10am to verify that vin number valid and its not stamped and see the damaged if it repairable or not. Then after you fix the vehicle, you have to bring the car back to them with all the receipt then they will decide to give you rebuilt title or not. SC I believe a lot easier to pass a lot of stuffs than NC.

I don't think an 8 yr old $6K salvage car with title issues is a "too good to be true" deal. It may be a good deal for someone who can get the issues corrected or it may be a bureaucratic money pit. If it can be taken care of for under 2K I'd say it's a deal worth doing. However, anything above that I'd buy a clean titled 03 instead.

You sure it is not SECRETLY a certificate of destruction or a title where it exceeds mechanicals limits and it cannot be registered? That guy must hate $$$$ to set it back for such a loss or HE'S LYING.

has to be stolen?

if it seems to drive ok you should buy it and either turn it into a track car or part it out. (and its not stolen)

The guy seems like a nice guy that got screwed , he said that he was looking for a Z06 but his wife got pregnant, so he look for and EVO instead. It was a present to himself and he paid 17K cash. He said that he has someone working trying to get him a title, that he might be able to have it register in Colorado or something. He said that he will still sell it, because it has been such a headache.

The

VIN= JA3AH86D04U069659

The car is actually a 2004 with 34K miles.

Can some one run a carfax for me? the car looks in real good condition. The car is being siting for 2 years, and he has start the engine at all. Why do I have to do to get the car to start safely? what do I do with fluids, gas, oil etc etc?

Thanks
