help: SRS reset w/out dealer

BEFORE I START.. I know the consequences about messing with the SRS system and I know the dealer can clear the light. I am just trying to resolve a common problem for free. My car is throwing an SRS light because I disconnected the the seat belts, there is no physical problem with the system.

I have searched high and low to figure out how to reset the srs ecu without paying all kinds of $$$$. Everyone says there is a lithium backup battery within the unit that makes this impossible....... so I decided to be the ginnie pig. I went to the junk yard and bought an srs unit (for a dollar) out of an 03 lancer which looks identical to the one in my evo... I'm thinking why not remove the battery or power source that keeps the circuit from clearing once power is no longer attached??? Unless I'm mistaken, all I see is a huge capacitor which would work as a backup power source but it would eventually drain off.. does anyone with electrical knowledge see something I don't.....

I plan on taking it to someone more knowledge with electrical components later this afternoon... just wanted to see if anyone on evom could help

Supposedly the Genisys scan tools can read and reset SRS and ABS codes. Call around to independent auto garages and see who might be able to reset the code for you for free or cheap.

I talked to an electrical engineer and he says the big capacitor(with the blue dash on top) could be the culprit.. I'm going to discharge it and put the SRS unit back in the car.....

its probably stored in an eeprom chip. draining those capacitors wont help you. think of it like a flash drive, only thats flash memory. if it is eeprom you would have to rewrite the chip. i believe this is how our ecus work. thing with eeprom also is the amount of times you can write to it is limited, granted the number of times is very large.

That's strange, I'd check the connections on your seatbelts again. On my old STi, there was nothing to reset unless the car had been in a collision, people remove seats and unplug those harnesses all the time. I've never seen a car where you had to bring it to the dealer for that.

The code stored might be stored in an eeprom which if the power is disconnected and capacitors drain will still retain the memory. Curious to see your results. Remember dont plug that control module in with the battery connected.
