Clutch install labor quotes

It's time for a new clutch. I'm seeing on the board here that most consider $500-$600 to be a fair price to pay. This is blowing my mind. Where in the world are you guys getting rates like this? The local stealership wants $92/hr @ a 15hr book time. The local "speed shop" wants $99/hr @ 13hrs. My trusted mechanic will do the whole job for $900.

There aren't many "tuner shops" around where I live (Birmingham, AL) so I suppose there isn't much competition to drive labor rates down. Where are you all having your work done?

Not at the dealership, I can tell you that lol. My local dealership quoted me just under $1k in labor alone, not including fluids or anything, so I'm taking it to a shop soon. Its about 2-3 hours away, but I think I'll still be saving

It cost me 10 years of DSM ownership, then I just did it myself

The good shops can get it done in 5-6 hours, that's why the rate is much lower.

I wouldnt pay a damm cent to anybody trying to charge me more than 400 hundred Ive been driving/learning about cars like ours for about two years now and I did my own clutch just two weeks ago. Reasearch the clutch write ups its really not as hard as people say it is just tedious.

I have been quoted around 500-1k (1.2k at the stealership) where I am at. Ended up paying 500 for the first change I did.

I've read the DIY write-ups and although they're very well written and detailed, I don't have access to a lift and wouldn't feel safe doing the whole thing with just jack stands.

Guess I'll just help my mechanic make his house payment.

Thanks for all the replies!

I was quoted $500 even by a reputable shop out here in nowhere's land. I would do it myself, but my other car is currently down and having two cars down at the same time if the switch became FUBAR would be asinine.

Believe me man I use to be the same way all you gotta do if you feel uncomfortable just put the front wheels under the car, that's what I did and another thing I've never heard of someone getting crushed by there car. Use that link I gave you and you'll be fine I hate seeing people getting taken for there money.

Not saying it could not happen, but I think it would be odd for all four (if using four) jack stands would fail. Even if you only put the front on jackstands you can set another set there with them as a back up if the first two fail.
