This answer is what oil industry folks would have expected from them.

at least they stand up for their product and they recognize their prduct has its place.

They basically told me that due to the time the car sat over the winter, fluctuating temps in the garage, and E85 fuel, they could see the oil doing this. They both suggested I should be running synthetic oil such as Mobil1 15w50 and stated Brad Penn 20w50 was not intended to be used with E85 fuel. Kuddos to Brad Penn for being totally honest.

I emailed Ken after we talked asking for the API ratings I should be using with E85 and he sent me this email-

If anyone would like to contact them, I found their info in several links-
http://www.amref.com/CMSFiles/File/T...OL_SEPT_10.pdf
This link also discusses their 2 stroke oil and how its not compatible with E85 and I realize thats totally different oil.

Again, this is for 20w50 only. I'm not sure how the other BP weights and oils react to E85 over time.

Here's a few videos I shot tonight to show the lumpy BP oil. The old BP oil was stored in an empty M1 container. Kind of long an boring 2 minute videos but it will give you an idea on how the oil drained. I wanted to drain from the bottom of the container so I used an awl in the 1st video and a large phillips (.3" dia) screwdriver in the 2nd video.

In the 2nd video, check out 1:55 to see some good lumpy oil turds.

Interesting thread. I was going to switch from Valvoline VR1 to BP, due to the fact that VR1 costs me as much as BP does now, but now I'm thinking twice. VR1 nets me excellent UOA's and is a FULLY CONVENTIONAL OIL!!! Synthetics may help in Evo's with no oil cooler, but any Evo that's driven on the street needs an oil cooler-period. Unlike most people on this forum, I can back that up with UOA's and oil temps cooler vs no cooler. Recent UOA-

wow, something seriously wrong with that.. I've been running 20W-50 Brad Penn for 3 oil changes since the summer started. E-85 fuel. I do wonder what caused this, there's enough people in here to verify it is not a normal occurrence.

So with that being said, when did you buy it? Where? How did it look when you poured it in, thicker than usual or same? ... probably don't have the container any more do you? Just wondering if there was a bad batch, or if somehow one of the quarts was contaminated. So aside from telling you it's not meant for your application, did they have any reasoning as to why it turned into poop?

WEIRD i just changed my oil RP 20w50 and i let this oil change go to 2000 miles and mine came out normal as always? sludging normally happens when you neglect to change it in the right time and or miles...

this is crazy, but its good to see that the oil company is honest and told you what to do.

as far as the OIL vs TEMP, is concerned... diesel trucks have been runing 1540 oil for ever, and ive never seen one sludge, even with excessive miles in the blistering cold....

i do however believe that the E85 may have reacted with the oil, its a fairly new formulation, and maybe BP didnt take this into account at first.

Man this has been been so long ago but I bought it last summer (2010) at Hill Petroleum who is a BP dealer. Video was taken spring of 2011. I don't have the old containers left and I sold the rest of the case on craigslist. I believe it was caused from it sitting over winter even though I would start it for and let it run for 25 minutes every couple weeks and sometimes take it for a spin on a nice winter day. I think the moisture from E85 could have possibly contaminated the oil causing it to break down and get lumpy. The oil had very low miles on it (less than 500). Changing the BP oil every couple months regardless of miles may help prevent this.

Again, they told me I should run a different brand of oil with E85 so I took their advice. Its hard to argue with that.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

No issues yet with Mobil1 15w-50. I will report any problems as it sits over the winter.

I would not put that glop in a built engine. Instead run what is arguably the best synthetic motor oil available...... Try Motul 300V 15W50 Competition oil.
