Should I back out of this deal? Please HELP!

So I just made a 25% deposit on this car:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sa...iced-sell.html

I am purchasing from out of state and planned on picking the car up on my returning flight from cali on the 20th. I work full time and take full time classes studying to be a mechanical engineer, so having the luxury of inspecting the car was not an option. I carefully picked this seller due to his 100% seller rating on these forums..

So I asked about more specifics regarding the TC and engine and such, and the seller responded saying the entire drivetrain was swapped from a stockish 05 evo 8 with 43k miles. stockish 43k miles being the biggest selling point, second being the RS tc. I made an offer, and made a deposit the next morning.

Tonight I stumbled on this:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sa...ut-yellow.html

just so happens to be an 05 evo 8, mostly stock, with an RS tc, but with 86k miles

Suggestions? Is this a coincidence?

that seller buys and sells a lot of stuff. its possible that the parts were from different cars. either way, dont rely on mileage for much of anything. my evo has 85k on it and its far tighter and more mechanically sound than most with half the miles. its all how it was maintained and treated.

your best bet is to just go and check the car out. if its in the condition he says its in, runs and drives as stated then go for it. if anything isnt as stated, get the deposit back and find another one, its not the only one around.

I just asked the seller how long the engine had been sitting before he swapped it in, and he said a week.

Yeah man, best bet is to go look at it. You are worrying about something you haven't seen yet. Don't stress!

but I wont be able to tell if it is a 43k or 86k car. Im paying for the sole fact the drivetrain is somewhat new (1/2 the miles it actually may be).

If the prev owner of the possibly 86k engine did not do the 60k service, wouldnt I be risking a LOT driving it daily for another 17k miles??? fml

timing belts are much tougher than you think. 60k is the worst case. my girlfriend went over 150k on her mirage before i found out and replaced it. it was still in good shape though!

i cant think of any way that you could tell one way or the other, thats the bad part about buying a car like that. he may be telling the truth, he may be lying. like i said if something is fishy when you show up, dont buy it. i bought my car over the phone and flew to texas to get it. i was sweating the whole time. the car wasnt 100% perfect, but it was still close to what i expected and im very happy with it. if it wasnt good i would have caught a flight home and found another.

He plays these games all the time. He low ***** everyone and asks top dollar when he resells it. I wouldn't buy a thing from him nor would I trust anything he says. If your paying anything close to 15k for a car with over 100k miles regardless if he says he replaced the motor, your insane. Save your money and buy a different car. There's plenty of good deals out there. I hope this helps.

+1. I would stay as far as possible from this seller. Before I even clicked on your link I wondered if I'd see that screen name pop up.

I wrote this to him:

hey man, I want to start by saying that I appreciate you being over-the-top cool and generous. You are also more than willing to meet me at a chicago airport and I really like how youre giving this car a fresh tune and detail before the sale. Solid business, awesome hospitality.

But heres the deal. I feel its fishy how the yellow 8 you have been parting out has so much in common to the swap that went into my car. Its an 05, had an rs case, was mostly stock... but with 86k miles... so whats going on?

I would like to think that the engine you swapped into the car im buying is in really good condition, barely broken in, and babied, being on the stock clutch and all, and wouldnt require really any major maintenance for at least 17k miles, and has TONS of life left.

But, I would also completely understand if the engine you swapped in was in such good condition for its age, being out of a completely-stock, unmolested evo, that even if it maybe had 86k miles, you knew it was in better condition than most every other 4g63 with 86k miles...

So dude, I would like to be real with you. I want this car. bad. Ive been wanting an evo for a very long time, and have been working really effing hard saving up for this one. Im 24, go to school full time, and sell verizon phones full time. If you need a sweet verizon hookup, im your guy, I can make **** happen no problem. But back to the point, I want you to be real with me. I want to make this work. Im still interested in the car, I think youre a good dude, and I think you can make me happy.

Can we work something out?
