Front Pass. Wheel play when up on jack? Help??

So i just noticed today, when i jack up the passenger front wheel off the ground i can grab the top and bottom of the wheel and shake it. There is about an inch of play when i shake it back and fourth but no noticeable noises when driving or turning the wheel. The drivers side is tight but the passenger has a bit of play. I also just put a used set of wheels and tires on, so alignment needs to be done anyway; but i just was wondering what this could be?... ball joint?? or hub assembly/bearing?? let me know what u guys think. Any advise would help. Thanks, Adam.

usually it's a ball joint. if you can grab the bottom of the wheel and pull upward and it kinda "clicks" it's a ball joint, if you can shake left-right (as if the wheel is turning) and it "clicks" then it's probably the hub

^^ Agreed also wanna add it could be the hub or tie rod when moved left-right.

Its a simple diag, jack the car back up, have someone come and move the wheel just like you were. Look under the car and look at the balljoint/hub/tie rod. You will see whatever is loose moving. For comparison, you can look at the driver side wheel.

Rod or ball joint. Either way, get it fixed ASAP

Definitely dont drive it if you have that much play! As already stated, tie rod will give you side to side play, balljoint will give up and down play, wheel bearing with have play in both usually.

Hi guys ...

I think I have a similar problem. While I was at the track getting tech they said they felt a bit of play back and forward. I also took it to Mitsubishi can get it check out as well and they did not find any wrong with nor anything lose. But for the tech and dealer check I was hearing like a raddle when I would hit bumps while turning right at a low speed. Any suggestions I should look at?

Well i jacked up the car this morning and even took the wheel off to get a closer look. Turns out that the ball joint seems okay and the tie rod has no play either. When i grab the wheel or rotor(with the wheel off) there seems to be play and it still jiggles without any movement in the steering or ball joint. This leaves me to think it may be the hub or hub bearing? Or could it even be that the large nut holding the hub on is a little loose? Thanks again guys.. I wanna figure this thing out as it is my daily.

you can check the nut that's holding it on. i don't know about evo's as i've never taken apart the hub but on the race car it's a large nut threaded on the spindle and it gets torqued to 1 ft-lb (basically just until it's snug, not tight).

sorry someone gave wrong info, up and down is either ball joint or hub, need to check suspension while shaking to see is which, side to side is either gonna be inner or outer tie rod, which you need to check suspension while shaking.

actually man that spindle nut where it goes on the axle, is hell of a lot more then 1lbft, make that come right off, you gotta search on here for the torque specs, iirc its between 80-120 lbs ft...just search to double check cuz honestly havent had my coffee yet, so im a little out of it still haha. But if it is the hub when you jack up the car, have a second person shake tire at 12 and 6 o clock and other person look behind the tire and wheel where you can see the axle, and watch where it goes in, look fore movement, and listen for clicking. To hear if theres noise you can also spin the tire jacked up in the air and listen for a faint roaring noise.
