Angry Broken bolt for manifold heat shield, removal advice?

Hey guys,

I was installing a new ARC manifold heat shield and as I was removing the bolts that hold the OEM manifold shield in place, the head of one of the bolts broke off. Probably because they were fairly old and worn due to all the heat from the manifold, and applying too much pressure.

My question is:

1. Do you guys have any tips or tricks to removing this broken bolt as I've seen tricks from welding another head to the bolt and people that use bolt extractors. I've heard mixed reviews about both and want to get it out as quick as possible.

2. Will I be fine just leaving the broken bolt in there or is it possible it will weave it's way down into the manifold from vibration?

Any help is appreciated as this is very annoying.

Sounds like a good time to get a ported & coated stock manifold and use this one as a core...

^this does not answer the question, I'm sure the OP knows this opsion. I have one as well in an already ported and coated Mani. and was going to use the bolt extractors route.

Yup, I've checked the search (like I always do haha) and couldn't find anything super helpful. I know there are extractors and some guys weld a head on to it, but I'm wondering if there are any tips and tricks or am I better off just leaving it.

This does make a new manifold set up seem tempting, but don't really want to spend $300 for 1 broken heat shield bolt at the moment.

How long has yours been sitting in the hole for the manifold shield? Any issues with it weaving down more or has it been sitting in the same spot since it happened?

Try the bolt extractor, but just try to drill the hole right in the middle, and deep enough...should work, you can also try heating it before you take it out.

It's been there for almost two years, it's going no where. The mani. is silver coated and was going to remove and have it black heat treated and have the supports shaved at the same time. Bolt remover should work and don't cost much.

Good to know someone is in the same boat as me lol. Have you tried a bolt extractor on it at all? I've seen some guys do it with success and others who have failed and ended up breaking the bolt completely.

I'll pick up an extractor kit and see how it goes soon.

Your best bet would be a machine shop.... those cast manis are no joke....especially when a bolt snaps in em.
