Are you doing the work yourself?

Just asking because to have a shop pull the motor, send the head off, send the block off, and put it all back together will be around $2500-$3000 (not including shipping which will be ~$300 both ways).

Also, don't forget all new gaskets, water pump, front case, balance shaft elim (might as well), cam gears (if you go 2.4), head gasket, studs, all new fluids, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff.

It can get very expensive, very quick.

EDIT - Oh, and please don't get a massive turbo first for instant gratification, because you will probably end up throwing a rod and ruining your stock block, which will add another $1800 or so on your bill since you won't have a good core anymore. Good luck man.

^ very well said and the stroker motor is the way to go because then you have something to go off and have a fresh motor lol there is no reason not to get a stroker motor in my opinion.

With less than $5k it's going to be way to tight to pull off the stroker or built 2.0. When you keep adding the costs of labor, shipping and the misc. stuff that needs to be replaced when swapping engines the bills just go way higher. Probably closer to $10K.

However, if you have less than 20k miles I would recommend you do a drop in. If not, I would use those $5K to build the transmission and TC and then save for the built bottom.
