Advice on 3 Point Harness w/o Rollcage

Wanted some information on this topic. I've heard it's not good to use 5 point harness on a street driven car but what about 3 point w/o a rollcage. What are your opinions or true facts about using this kind of setup?

Info:
- Its not a daily driven car but it is driven on streets/highways for cruising or what not
- No rollcage/bar
- Using factory mounting points

Is it safe?

Let the debate begin.

There will be alot say it is not safe and some say it is. I will be one to say that it is safe.

Let's face it if a harness was designed to save someones life going from 300 to 0 in less than a second how is it possible that it is unsafe in a 60mph collision?

As long as you read, understand, annd follow the installation procedures to the fullest there is in no way any danger. I don't care if someone says something about "submarining" out of a harness I call bs because the same would happen with a stock seatbelt. I do believe however if you mount them incorrectly in more than a 30* angle it can and will compress your spine.

Here's some advice keep your stock seat belt and mount the harnesses. Its perfectly fine to have both mounted and for street driving if you feel its unsafe use the stock one and just pull the harness through and lay it in the back floorboard. I have 4 point and this is what I do. I don't wear mine on the street, however I don't feel they are unsafe IF mounted and used correctly.

^correct sir let it begin! If you dont have a cage then you should stick with the stock belts because if you get into a rollover the stock belt are made so that you lean towards the middle of the car. this gets you head lower then the tops of the seats and keeps the roof off your head, hense no brain matter on the road!!!! harnesses are made to hold you in place durning any accident but will allow the roof to cave in on your head, hense the use of a roll cage to stop this! I hope this helps!!!!

I can and have heard this explanation before but the way I see it is if the roof caves in in a said rollover it will first contact the top of the seat unless u are caveman tall, and will more than likely break the back of the seat. Allowing you to move free of either harness or stock seat belt and flop about in the car.

I just can't see that reason being dangerous if a car were to roll and land on the roof, the roof is going to cave in so fast that if it impacts your head regardless if you can move toward the middle of the car or not your probably going to die regardless.

A car crash is very hard to understand and a lot of it is just fate. I've seen car crashes and rollovers where occupants where wearing seatbelts and died, and I watched my buddy who was street racing crash flip 9 times through the air go inbetween a telephone pole and the guide wire land in someones driveway right side up wearing no belt at all and ended up in the passenger seat with no harm. I was suppose to be in that car with him but decided not to. Sorry about posting bout street racing but this is what can happen and y it shouldn be done. Keep it on the track. He was very lucky he walked away and the police said that if he had had his belt on he would have died because the driver side roof was smashed to the butt part of the driver seat.

It truly isn't safe to run 4/5 point harnesses on the street. In race cars, you have a full cage and nets to protect the driver. Its a totally different world. Everything is done to protect driver. On a street car, you sure have no more protection the the chasis. If you go to a track event with NASA or some other group, they will not allow you to use your harnesses without a cage. Safety has to be looked at as a total package, not just belts.

Those Corbeau belts are no better than the stock units.

A good option is the GC lock, that works in conjuntion with your stock belts. Very popular choice for autoxers and track guys who don't run harnesses.
