buzzing noise/smell of rubber (help)

Out of no where when i got back from my friends house i heard the engine making a strange buzzing noise. Its very hard to explain, if it makes the noise again tomorrow ill record it. It also makes the noise shutting down, sounds like its powering down; again very hard to explain. I could also smell like what seemed as rubber burning by the belts. Turned the car off and the smell went away. Turned the car back on and it made the buzzing noise and the smell came back, i looked at the belts and it seemed everything was ok and nothing was rubbing. So im lost on what could be the noise and where the smell is coming from. Car has 102k miles on it.

You may have a pulley bearing that's on its way out and the belt is slipping ever so slightly across it as it becomes harder to turn. Idler/tensioner pulleys with their smaller bearings have a tendency to not make the growling noise you usually expect out of a failing bearing and instead chirp or buzz.

I may be wrong, but it doesn't hurt to throw it out there.

It doesn't have to be along the t-belt drive, but it doesn't matter, I've seen wadded drive belts end up wrecking a tbelt so I'd keep it parked at least until you figure it out. The buzzing you describe makes me think alternator, but that's obviously just a guess.

i guess ill do some more inspection, i cant take off the upper timing belt cover off because one bolt is rusted so it just stripes and the other i cant reach. Im also going to test if the alternator is going out.

My alternator is going bad. Had someone help me figure it out haha. My battery gauge is showing 12v when the engine is running. He also tested the battery and its not charging at all. The alternator is over heating, tested this out by touching it and burning my hand off.

The burning rubber smell may be burning insulation from wires in your alternator, but probably the belt slipping as the alternator periodically drags or locks up
