evo's awd system, verus sti awd system in snow

because the a dccd and three lockable differentials, i was just wondering if it performed alot better in the snow. (wit snow tires of course). Some of my friends have been telling me about oh well their sti runs in the snow, I haven't had any problems in the snow wit my awd, i'm just asking if the sti's dccd and limited slip front, is noticeablly better, then my evo's system.

also what are the major difference between the 2 systems

Well my car has the same awd as the evo, open front diff, limited slip clutch diff in the back and viscous center diff. I can say it performs very well in the snow. I would say the center differential would have minimal advantage with dccd, because with the viscous it is 50/50 most of the time anyway. The main advantage the sti would have is the limited slip front differential offers more traction in the front, because instead of just the wheel with the least traction trying to grab in the front, both will.

I would tilt that towards the STi...if anything, Subbies do very good in the snow.

sti's drivetrain is way better for snow thne the evo. You can control how much power is routed front to back, and best of all everything locks... i mean what more could you ask for... ACD needs to become a factory option or add on.. get to work mitsu

Uh, the WRXs come with a viscous rear LSD, not clutch type. The STis active diff should react quicker than the Evos viscous center diff unless it has a high tension rating. The WRX is rated at 4 kgpf. What's the Evos?

Oh I thought for sure it was clutch type, I didn't even know they made viscous diffs for side to side power transer. Anyhow that's interesting, I thought only center diffs were liquid coupled.

Not to sort of hijack the thread but-

I drove my EVO in the snow yesterday for the first time, about 5+ inches on gravel and about 1-3 inches on half-assed plowed asphalt street and the thing stuck real well. I have Pirelli P-zero Nero M+S on it, stock size, SSR rims for winter.

God I hate Chicago winters!

if you got about 2 inches of snow, do you think the evo will do ok with stock tires if you drive it around carefully? i'm a former 350z owner and that thing sucked *** even when driving 15mph in the snow....

no, it won't work well at all in the snow with stock tires from what I've heard. I have the HTR+'s on my car and it was a little squirmy yesterday in a few inches of snow.

i'm figuring if you go max 20mph with AWD... you'll survive even with the stock tires.

2WD, AWD, 4WD - all worthless without the proper tires.

NO NO NO,,,,dont wreck your new evo.

The stock tires are high performance tires, not for winter at all.

If you do get some snow, dont venture 100yards from your house and find out for yourself. Otherwise get some ALL-season tires from tire rack,, I have the conti-xtreme contact,,, just had 6 inches the other day and I have an absolute riot in the snow. I covered a huge Vacant parking lot with dounuts, and figure 8's.

I looked back at all the fresh powder that was once there, and laughed cause it looked like somone scribbled over 300 square yards of parking lot!!!!!! LOLOLOLOL,,, my wheels were packed with snow, also snow was flying over my hood and roof as I did my thing. Just get some different tires for the winter. Have fun!

hmm.... i'm thinking winter tires may be too extreme so i'm probably going to go with all-season tires
